The house was probably worth a lot less than he paid for it so he just walked away and stopped paying the mortgage and property taxes. If you all haven't noticed, there has been a lot of that happening since about 2007. Doesn't necessarily mean that a person is broke or has money problems, it is just a financial move. A dickish financial move, but still a financial move.
