My grandfather was an alcoholic and a smoker. He lived until 89....he would have loved this.
I always felt somewhat guilty when I was the one looking after him and took him to costco so he could fill up the cart with vodka

You
should
feel bad. You could've filled the cart for him, he was 89 for crying out loud.

My grandfather used to dial up the taxi service that delivered liquor so he could have his bottles of Jameson in the nursing home. What else is an old Irish sailor supposed to do there?

The one I worked in a few years ago was perfectly fine with the residents having their own booze on site if it didn't conflict with their medications. One guy in particular had several bottles of decent liquor locked up with the narcotics so it'd be left alone.
/the smokers had it tougher, due to the oxygen tanks everywhere

The Gin lime Rickey, an excellent drink. Underappreciated in the modern age. Can you get a good one in a bar? Hardly. But nooooooo they can mix Vodka and Red Bull. Farking Philistines!

You should come to Cleveland, there are at least three places making classic cocktails including one that makes their own bitters and Vermouth.

Some time ago, I spend six weeks on a orthopedic floor of a hospital in Rochester, MN. I was surprised when I saw that the entire lower shelf of the "meds" trolley was filled with liquor bottles, each with a prescription label attached. The nurse explained that, for a lot of the older patients, the docs often preferred to let them have a drink or two instead of sleeping pills or anti-anxiety meds. Being underage at the time, I failed in my attempts to get similar treatment.

my grandad was a smoker and drinker his whole life. When he got brain cancer in his 80s, he went to a local cancer center for treatment and their version of hospice care. His doctor wrote him a script for his brand of smokes, a smokeless ashtray and a lighter and had it posted in his chart, much to the chagrin of the head nurse in his wing. My dad heard them having it out in a conference room, with the doc telling the nurse "he's smoked for 70 years, has about two sentient weeks left - and you want him to go through nicotine withdrawal on top of brain cancer?".

Retirement and nursing homes are pretty depressing places.
In a perfect world, they'd let the residents at nursing homes smoke dope.
But it's those old trouts that keep voting in the "tough on drugs" idiots.
Old people are their own worst enemy.

My 86 year old grandma drank 2 bottles of wine on Christmas. She doesn't actually drink much, but you could barely tell she was tipsy. All 110 pounds of her. I'm 140 and was well buzzed after one glass

So, they used to be able to bring their own bottles and now they can't? How is that spiffy for anyone except the nursing home which now has a new revenue stream?

My grandfather was in a hospice at the end of his life.
I flew in to visit him and I guess I was expecing some kind of "Tuesdays with Morrie" thing.
When I came in I asked him if he needed anything. He said "get me outta here."
They let me sign him out to his favorite bar.

'Cause when Granny gets plastered, it is a disaster, she smokes she sings she swears
Her legs get all weavy, it's better than TV, she throws the piano downstairs.
But don't ever doubt it, the best thing about it, when Granny has had a few,
Is she doesn't like to drink alone, so she gets us plastered too.

I work in a senior facility in So Cal, and we have happy hours. The residents have to provide a bartender. We can't serve them, but we can organize it.

My weekend job is at an upscale independent living retirement community in Iowa.
It has a lounge and has had a liquor license since 1985. Friday evenings before dinner and on is "Friday Frolics." I've worked there only seven years, but I have heard some amazing tales from before that. of some legendary drinking on Fridays.
Three years ago, they got a Wii and opened the bar for Wii tournaments Saturday evenings. I am told some of those came very close to fist fights after a good number of drinks.

God yes. Gin Rickey is a wonderful drink. I went from G&T to G$ diet tonic to Gin Rickeys. All of the flavor without the nauseating sweetness.
So why do the bartenders always look at me like I have a dick growing out of my forehead when I order one?!

Speakeasy
in the basement of the Bier Markt is one of the others and my brain is farting on remembering the third. Between VTR and Speakeasy you're good to go, VTR is the gold standard but if you're looking for a little lower prices and not quite as ecentric an atmosphere Speakeasy is nice.

I don't care if I'm 60 or 90, if I'm already in a home, there had better be booze and video games. No kids of my own, never will be (unless I adopt which is doubtful), so bring on the time-killers and fun times till I keel over. I'll make sure there's a DNR too, no sense in wasting the time or money on me.

Good. Every nursing home I've ever been to was a stinking Hell hole. Every friend and relative I know that's had to stay at one hated every second of it. Most of the complaints were because the nurses were useless. One exception was for one that actually busted her arse to attend to the patients and that was only because she was new probably trying to secure her position. They were not very clean either which doesn't help. I would much rather be taken out to the middle of a field and have my brains blown out than stay at one.
