We lose a lot of money on the show with that rating on that night.

What are they expecting for Fridays?

Please don't start the letter-writing campaign. I can't take it

Boo-hoo.. don't be Fox's entertainment president if you don't want the backlash.

That letter writing crack sounded pretty passive-aggressive to me.

ITHM "I don't want to answer questions in the press about it." Which translates to "I don't want to have to justify my decisions."

Tired show is tired.

I just started watching the newest season after taking a break for a while.

1. No Peter? WTF!
2. Overacting, "kooky" alternate Olivia a la The Parent Trap? WTF!
3. Walter...OK, it's hard to ever dislike Walter.

To be be fair to FOX, Fringe has actually been sort of terrible this year. Their decision to basically reboot the whole show simply didnt work.

Really? It's doing poorly in the Friday Night Death Slot? I'm farking shocked.

fark you so much, Fox.

Except they didn't reboot the whole show, he's just in the wrong universe.

Least that's my take on what's going on.. also why the intro is orange-ish now.

Setting the show in a new universe = rebooting the show

Not necessarily, he just needs to find his way back home. Which hopefully if it is getting the axe they will wrap it up cleanly, and it will be the last thing I watch on Fox.. ever.

I don't actually watch Fringe but from their other decisions (no not just the handling of Firefly), they could have fooled me.

Programming decisions are made by people with little to no interest on the material being shown. They still follow their antiquated ratings system because it requires the least amount of work on their part and it's all the sponsors care about.

They're not in the business of making good television. They're in the business of making profitable television. Quality is irrelevant.

2012-01-08 07:49:40 PM
Fringe is my favorite show currently on television. Shame if they cancel it.

This. I actually lost interest after the first three episodes and turned my attention to the far more engaging Grimm.

Something competitive with the CBS scripted at 9 and 10 (CSI NY, Blue Bloods) which Fringe is not.

I feel your pain. Seriously. I haven't watched FOX since they canceled Firefly and TSCC. I miss House, but from what I hear I ain't missing too much.

/Never seen Fringe.
//Heard good things about it.
///I hope that FOX spares your show.
////Flood these farkers with letters.

If no one watches the show, why was it consistently near the top of the Amazon and iTunes download charts when Fox wasn't holding back new episodes from VOD services like they did last fall?

I really think the ratings dominance of crappy shows is mostly due to their older demo that just doesn't timeshift like the younger generation. I wish we had a ratings system more like BBC, where timeshifted and streamed shows are counted in the total ratings. Of course, their system is not advertising based, so they can do that.

/The BBC us also awesome because they give people a dominatrix Irene Adler to prance around naked save for some careful blocking for New Years, while we just get zombie Dick Clark.

2012-01-08 07:58:48 PM
So the Fox guy that was interviewed is going to retire soon and let the next guy cancel the show. He does not want a flaming bag of poop on his doorstep so he is trying to reduce potential damage by giving fans hope.

2012-01-08 07:59:46 PM
fringe is a gross show

2012-01-08 08:00:30 PM
For everyone hating on Fox if they cancel this show, just remember they are the only network that even tries to make these shows work. They have to cancel them because nobody watches them. Its not the fault of the time slot.

/They gave this show at least 2 more seasons than it had earned from its ratings.

2012-01-08 08:03:42 PM
Fringe is Big Bang Theory Bad.

They should totally renew that money pit Terra Nova then.

I quit watching Fox when they cancelled Futurama.

I don't think I've lost anything by avoiding them since, especially since that was right around the time Simpsons began to suck.

/don't care about Fringe
//X-Files was great until Mulder left

A FOX sci-fi Friday Night Death Slot show is canceled? Oh no not Firefly!

/Wait, or was it Dollhouse
//...Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles?

...wait, why do all of those have Summer Glau in them?

Season 4 is barely holding my interest. Season 3 ended with what should have been the beginning of a new chapter - a room full of people from both universes being forced into a position that they must work together to save their worlds.

Season 4: Back to one-off episodes with virtually no mention of any of that.

This season should have been about the two worlds having to work together. It should have been a season-long arc, with the added conflict that Peter's returned after being a ghost or whatever he was, but nobody trusts him because nobody knows him.

But instead they're doing nothing - nothing - with this storyline. After all that fantastic build-up at the end of 3, they've absolutely squandered their momentum.

I watch now only in the hope that they'll get back on track. But at the moment, I can't even remember any episodes from this season, while I can recall in detail several from the last.

If this is what they have to offer, I'll say it: They should have cancelled it at the end of last season, leaving that fantastic - and now completely unexplored - balance of cliffhanger/resolution as the finale.

whither_apophis: The only upside to Fringe being cancelled is it would free up Anna Torv to start doing lesbian porn

Anna Torv can be out-acted by a plank of wood. Putting her in porn of any kind would still be beyond her abilities,
with the possible exception of sexy robot porn.

If it was BBT bad,a renewal wouldn't be an issue.

Yes, this. Fringe has actually been flat out bad this year. I have no idea what TPTB were thinking when they decided to take the show in this direction.

I hate that a lot of the network shows I like are always in danger of being cancelled :/. Although this season of Fringe has not really sucked me in, but I'd continue to watch in hopes that it will get better again.

I don't really understand why the networks want to stick to the stone age form of a ratings system that they currently use. Technology has changed, it's time to adapt. However, I'm sure this is due to it being cheaper for them to keep making new shows because the longer the shows are on the air, the more they have to pay the stars and the budgets get bigger.

Anna Torv is a fantastic actress - anyone who watched season three would find that impossible to deny, and it really makes you rethink what she was doing in the first two seasons, since in retrospect it was clearly a choice on her part.

The bottom line is that Fringe had an audience and lost it because people didn't like the show. I still watch it but I won't miss it when it goes away.

How is it this season?

I haven't had time to watch it and with the way the last season went, I can't see this one being very good.

Well there's your answer. I only gave it 2 seasons. But in my defense, I felt that despite the potential, it was 1.75 seasons too many.

yeah, this season has been kinda weak, but it's a plot twist away from getting good, so i'm happy to keep watching

Bonus: She does a great Nimoy impression.

/I love Fringe, but it's had its day. This season is starting to drag.

You should watch the first half of season three at least - by far the best Fringe has ever been.

2012-01-08 08:38:50 PM
Really liked the first 2 seasons, but it just seems that the writers were running out of story in the 3rd season. Fringe had a good run, but even The Wire probably lasted a season longer than it should have.

robsul82: RENEW THIS SHOW JACKWAGONS

Sounds like the ratings don't justify the budget.

As for the Friday night slot, Fox is kind of painted into a corner. Sunday is their animation night, Monday is House, and Tuesday and Wednesday, they'd have to compete with their FX shows which are better received.

2012-01-08 09:10:15 PM
And what really sucks is that in place of Fringe they'll come up with another stupid-ass "reality" show and throw all of their advertising dollars at it. Hell, they'll probably find yet another show that Gordon Ramsay can host since he's already got three of 'em on FOX.

Oh, but they don't want to lose money with Fringe. Heavens, no. After all, it's not FOX's fault. All they did was just move it to a day and time that almost no one watches TV, all but stop advertising it and take it off the air for almost two months. Nah...can't be FOX's fault.

You sure on that? Because if the producers didn't like the characterization, they would have nudged her out of it sooner.

No, stupid was moving Fringe to Fridays to begin with. THAT was industrial-grade stupid.

And FARK that FOX president, getting all whiny about the letter-writing campaigns. What an idiot. He's pretty much sealed his fate; I can see Fringe guys sending him stuff just on general principle now. Too bad, douchebag...should've kept your dumbass mouth shut.
