Austerity is Newspeak for weakening gov't to the benefit of businesses.

The problem is NOT the budgets, the social spending. The problem is the MONEY ITSELF. Most countries use debt based money.

We pay debt with debt and wonder why inflation is so high and borrowing is preferred to saving. Our system rewards borrowing and punishes saving.

It certainly hasn't helped the US, where despite a low long term capital gains tax, there is very little savings. Norway on the other hand, has over four times as much money saved per capita despite having a capital gains tax twice as high as the US.
