But you figure you will just skip the part about finding out what the place is like for yourself, and just go straight to hating NYers because you have heard its a bad place.

Manhattan by way of Queens Village followed by a long term layover on Long Island and a transfer in Astoria.

I think the plan is for the tourist rush to hit Brooklyn first before it gets big, then the manhattan.. (and of course back to the midwest once everyone in this city is completely over tit)

Every time walk through times square which, unfortunately, is twice a day unless I go out for lunch which in case it's 4x a day, I see the tourists and think to myself: "you poor souls...you could have gone to Aruba or Bermuda for what you're paying to come to this shiatshow."

This. For the record, we are happy to have tourists come to NYC and are also glad to give people directions and restaurant recommendations (hell, I just gave someone a killer recommendation in the AMNH yesterday). However, it would be nice if tourists understood that the rest of us are trying to get to work or whatever. Just pull off to the side with your maps and if you want to stand on the escalator instead of walk, do so on the right side. kthxbye.

That's the fundamental problem with cleaning up New York. A succession of mayors and PR people have promoted it as an urban Disneyworld. They never mentioned to everyone else that the people who live here are in a hurry to get to their jobs.

I work near Radio City, so I'm getting a kick....
I know it's amazing to see a building taller than 4 stories tall, because in the little podunk town you come from, a grain elevator is the biggest thing you've ever seen, aside from your family's stomachs.....but seriously move to the side to stare and drool. Also, taking flash photos of a building 500 feet away is not going to work. It just isn't. Also, Magnolia bakery is ok, but it isn't so awesome that you need to pose for photos in front of it. And FYI their cupcakes are the worst thing in the entire place. Like eating cornbread covered in frosting made of nothing but sugar. Also, that guy in the dirty ratty homemade Mickey Mouse costume, causing congestion on the sidewalk, is posing for photos with you for money. For money! He isn't standing there for his health and he wasn't sent there by Disney. Don't be shocked when he shakes you down for cash. Pedicabs....stupid. Wearing matching I heart New York shirsts just makes you a mark. Don't be shocked if your wallet disappears. Ground Zero? It's not a place to pose for family photos. It's a mass grave. don't be an idiot. Would you go to Auschwitz and pose for a family photo? Olive Garden? If you go there instead of the thousands of amazing food choices in NYC, you should just shoot yourself. It's ok to be a tourist, just don't act like one.

I didn't see the big deal either until I went for the first time about 3 years ago. My GF is from there so we didn't do to much touristy things but I got to be there with a New Yorker and see it as a New Yorker. Now I go a couple of times a year and I love it there. You might enjoy it there is something for everyone there. Don't waste time in Times Square it is one giant gift shop.
