j/k (not on that team.. no idea what they're calling it)

Sounds like a damn good idea.

Honestly, this feature would be much appreciated, especially here in Connecticut where at any time you can be on one street filled with McMansions, then all of a sudden turn right into Crackton.

I think this GPS would self-destruct in Toledo.

Avoiding dangerous areas is obvious. What's the novel part of this invention?

me too. I hope that becomes a standard feature in every GPS package.

I'm guessing Census data and straight percentages of minorities?

GAT_00: I'm guessing Census data and straight percentages of minorities?

Nah, FBI self-report crime stats.

This would be very interesting to use in the Bay area. I'll bet it would turn down every one of my favorite rave spots.

Does it sound an alarm anytime you are near MLK Blvd?

I don't need GPS to tell me I'm farked. The abandoned homes, meth heads and gunshots will suffice.

2012-01-08 04:20:44 PM
Hah. Reminds me of a time when the roommates and I took a trip down to KC to go to Worlds Of Fun. Apparently, the quickest way there is through a really crappy part of town with boarded up windows and abandoned buildings.

/And I rode the Patriot 15 times in a row.
//That's 3 fives, and that's awesome.

I was just asking myself the other day if this came as an option in ultra-luxury cars. I approve.

Been there, done that.

Not in Connecticut, but same thing. One minute you're looking at green lawns, the next it's boarded up windows and Camaros on bricks. Never seen anything like that in Europe.

At least I wasn't carjacked or shot at...

That's part of the Avoid The South package, available to customers located outside the Southeast.

Come on. We all know that anyone who would actually use that feature already has a superhuman awareness of their proximity to what they think "ghetto" is.

It's from Microsoft: it should come with a bulletproof vest and run-flat tires.

I assume you have to turn that feature off if you want to get anywhere in Atlanta.

The Southie Projects and the Bunker Hill projects in Boston were mostly white dangerous areas, but I guess only housing projects with minorities are dangerous.

LegacyDL: So much for walking in Philly Camden.

Philly isn't all that bad really and isn't high in the crime of `negros looking to kill innocent white people'. Philly is actually pretty chill for the most part. (during the day).

I replaced my Tom Tom after it tried to kill me. It routed me through a part of Oakland that I clearly should not have been in. Further inspection of the route it gave me on Google maps later revealed that there was no logical reason for this route. It did the same thing in San Jose.

I gave it to my ex wife.

2012-01-08 04:26:18 PM
Eh, whenever I think I might be in a highly-pigmented area, I just search Google maps for nearby rent-to-own rim stores and check cashing agencies. If theres more than 2 hits in a 1-mile radius, I search for the nearest frozen yogurt place and head in that direction.

No, they just keep you on Peachtree until you get to your destination.

I can understand not wanting to drive thru a shady/shiatty looking neighborhood for the sake of having to feel you gotta watch your back, but how often do we hear stories of people getting mugged, raped, shot, or stabbed because of the route their GPS took them?

I don't trust any GPS for where to go. I'll use it to make sure I don't miss a turn or if an accident has the highway shut down, but trusting it for a good route is just stupid. They're much worse than Google and Bing and even they'll give you stupid routes sometimes.

2012-01-08 04:29:13 PM
Martin Luther King is black so obviously his stretch of road is going to be longer and penetrate deeper into any city so it's always bound to go through some dangerous areas at some point.

2012-01-08 04:30:27 PM
I'm guessing Newt Gingrich will be buying this.

Probably US 71 if it was more than 10 years ago or so. That ran right down Prospect Ave and I made the same mistake with a paper map. They've since rerouted the highway so it is a 4 lane divided highway that bisects said ghetto with lots of green space. Stay on it, no problem.

I'm sure it will come in handy for areas with high drug and prostitution arrests.

A few weeks ago, I would have loved this option. My GPS had me in "downtown" East St. Louis while travelling for work (I'm from Pittsburgh). As an added bonus, I got called a "cracker" by a young girl on the corner as I turned on to MLK Blvd.

True story.
