Some of those pictures are incredible. But I came for the boobies, and I'm leaving disappointed.

#8 looks to be HDR, not something Nat Geo usually goes for. If it's not HDR, it's heavily post-processed.

A few really amazing photos and a couple that look like they might have been there by mistake.

Yeah, the zebra and cheetah images were...particularly odd choices. I'm a sucker for nature photos, but those two made me think "The camera went off at the wrong time or they farked up the aim, and said 'Fark it, we'll send it in anyway and say its artsy."

Some good shots, but I have seen better entries submitted by Farkers here.

Every month I send them soft-focused B&W shots of the steps on my front porch and I never hear back from them! And then I see they give awards for "creativity and photographic quality". Well, la-dee-da! That's the last soft-focused B&W photo of front porch steps they're getting from me, I tells ya!

I'd submitted these two... competition was brutal! The last 10 years have been a revolution in photography thanks to digital cameras.

Lone Stranger: Dugs or GTFO.

I have not seen the term dugs in print since I think a National Lampoon magazine about 30 years ago. Made me pause and reflect on the greatness of the OC and Stiggs stories.

/sometimes I get concerned about excessive traffic on my lawn. Please stay off it.

The contest rules specified no HDR and minimal processing.

I like how #4 basically screwed up the shot (other people have managed to capture a high-speed hunt shot, especially in a Nat Geo contest), but he got to be a finalist anyway by talking his way into it being an "artistic" choice.

"I personally believe that, beyond the formal representation of reality, mediated by the technical instruments necessary to fix an image in time, photography is made of insights. The shot is the last act of image capturing and in many ways the easiest part of the whole process. This panning effect, even in its imperfection, with the chromatic harmony of the background, with all the needless information eliminated and the luck of having the big cat's lifted tail in symmetry with the impala horns, brings the observer inside the hunting without distractions."
