Every Aussie I've known has been bat-shiat insane. Are they bat-shiat insane because of vegemite or do they like vegemite because they're bat-shiat insane?

We Australians love vegemite, its all like great and tastes nice and you can eat it on toast, which is made from bread and fire and stuff you just get some knives, some fire and put them on the bread and you go "Eat rawr!" and you get vegemite happys in your belly and you can trick septics into eating too much of it by telling them its like jam, you need it thick if you really want the taste of it but you should probably not do that if you're going out because the taste will stick on your mouth for about twenty minutes and you'll be driving to pick up something like pills or herd or leaf or ganja or a little of this and that and you'll suddenly really want some vegemite and you'll leave some poor dealer out on the side of the road just all alone waiting for you while you drive back on the left side of the street to your house to have some more vegemite and your mates are all there surrounding the ol' bucketbong and going hey, wheres the chuff mate and you don't know you don't know!
Thankfully mostly people in Melbourne take stupid pills, those guys are wankers.

There is no rational explanation for this bizarre behavior beyond a dare or bet and some stubborn people. Vegemite is revolting, Oz people know this, and the nation's perverse sense of humor is the only way I can make sense of an entire culture's 'appreciation of salty tar' spread on bread. Good one, guys and sheilas.

Which state is that? I recall in NSW back in the day if you had a small amount for personal use it was an infringement which didn't even go on your record.

Yeah, I think a lot of the Vegemite/Marmite hate is from people doing it wrong.
Looking at my jar of Vegemite vs my jar of peanut butter, the serving size for the Vegemite is
one-seventh
that of the peanut butter.

Aquired taste and all. I worked in Oz for few months for a Kiwi company. I like trying new stuff and thought i'd give it a shot. I spread it on a peice of bread like I would spread cream cheese on a bagel -- NASTY!!! Then I tried just a small amount, maybe a 1/4 or 1/2 tsp for a slice of bread. Not bad. Intriguing. I was told the greatest thing was a "mousetrap": Basically a grilled cheese sandwich with vegemite. I tried it, made by a connoisseur. It was pretty good. Same sort of "funk" as swiss cheese, but maybe a bit saltier.
If you're adventurous go try it, but start small. In Oz, you could get this tiny little jars, probalby 2 tbsps in the thing. I don't think I've seen them in the states. And the jars I have seen are way overpriced.
Oh, and its high in B vitamins, and made from yeastly byproducts of beer brewing.

Vegemite is fine. Marmite too.
Partial ingredients are from the bypoduct of beer making. Like concentrated, fudgy-textured brewers yeast. (With Fark & its beer snobs, you'd think this stuff was more well known)
Meant to be used sparingly. Goes nice with toasted bread & butter, but I mix in in with eggs or vegetables. If it wasn't so hard to work with though....

During highschool we had this "international day" where everybody brought in food from different countries. Well, whoever chose Australia brought vegemite. I spread some on some toast. Handed it to a firmed and said "Try this." He took it, asked if it was Nutella, and took a big bite. I will treause the look on his face for the rest of my days.

Musk sticks.
With every bite I was confused as to whether I loved it or was about to puke.
(Imagine if someone squirted perfume on circus peanuts, and that's approximately how they taste.)

I'm confused, how is marijuana illicit in Australia if it's legal there?

I have a jar of Marmite I use for grilled cheese sandwiches. For years I have used yellow mustard on my grilled cheese and I still like it better. But there are days where the flavor you get from Marmite is better than the MSG on Doritos. Both have the 6th flavor your tongue can identify: savory.

Oh it's not legal, and it's not openly tolerated by politicians or anything either, but at the same time it's not *that* criminal and there's a pretty large segment of the population that would like to have it legalised AFAICT, though they're not really all that vocal. There does seem to be a bit of a puritan streak in the politics here so I don't see anything major changing until/unless some other country like the US or the UK goes for it first.
IIRC the legal penalties differ by state. In WA there's a $100 fine if you're caught growing for personal use, though the number of plants considered personal use seems to change, it's down to one at the moment, again AFAICT. In Queensland simple possession carries a sentence up to 15 years, though apparently a caution is the more usual penalty.
For the record, since I arrived in my currently adopted country, I've been very well (and legally) behaved, but this area of law and civil rights still interests me.

Also, for a little entertainment, read about a town in NSW called
Nimbin
(new window), which seems to have been established after a music festival in the 70s where everyone just forgot to go home afterwards.
Only place I've ever been (other than amsterdam) where weed is sold and consumed openly on the streets. The wikipedia page mentions a police crackdown in '08 but when I went in 2010 it was as open as ever.

That's hilarious and farking nasty. I also felt sick just watching him shovel a whole farking jar of Vegemite into his mouth :) That's about a month's worth of salt he just consumed in 5 minutes, FFS. Wouldn't surprise me if he threw up a couple of minutes later, all that salt would seriously fark up your system.
