As far as I can find, no other black women went into space before her so, she is the first black woman to travel in space from any country. Or, I guess you could just say that I'm being picky.

Okay. You're being picky.

They had a public seminar last year in Florida that I wanted to go to, but couldn't. I wanted to suggest using the 13 Friedman design principles for casinos to enhance and organize the crew's living space (nope, no video poker machines).

The money for the winning team, $500,000, is small, but is designed to help jumpstart the effort. everyone think that NASA is diverse

(half a million will employ her, her travel expenses, a secretary, an office and some stationery).

No, but I guess I was demonstrating the difficulty of conveying a joke in a few typed words on an un-moderated public forum which is rife with both sarcasm AND earnest racism.

Or maybe my joke sucked.

Fun fact: the current administrator and deputy administrator of NASA were originally recruited to NASA by Nichelle Nichols. Link

Maybe nobody's too sure where NASA is going these days but it's freaky to think that the top two people there are a butterfly effect of Gene Roddenberry's casting decision on a TV show 45 years ago.

2385 A.D.

Rastafarians in Spaaaaace!

They don't fly too fast.

The resin keeps building up on their electricals and shorting them out.

But they've got the only space freighters in the solar system built of old steel drums. Some of these guys can play "Yellow Bird" while bouncing down a Jeffries Tube. It's just a matter of curvature.

In fact, most of them seem to work in grow-ops in the asteroid belt, where you can hose down the dome and use the wash for bong water. The Rasta Colony on Vesta could supply the whole solar system with sensamilla but doesn't export. Most of the commercial and medical marijuana comes from Venus Orbit, which enjoys the perfect climate for growing weed. Some of the marijuana trees are over 120 feet long, not counting their root systems. Their stems are used to build huts. Their seeds are used to play hacky-sack.

But seriously. This is cool.

Not just because a black woman is making some serious history in space science and engineering, but because somebody is finally working on a century ship. Hey, it may not be NASA, but I'm sure that the discovery of an Earth-like planet anywhere within a century of sub-light travel will draw NASA into the game. DARPA are just the idea people. Somebody else would have to develop the hardware and software, like they did with the Internet, another famous DARPA idea whose time has come.

Watching Star Trek as a kid made me want to become an astronaut. But I have the dumb and can't math good. I have great admiration for people with the talent and persistence to achieve their greatest dreams.

Seriously though (and not entirely off topic) kids with learning difficulties in math ought to be given the same breaks and help that kids with reading disabilities get. There may be more scientists in the world if they did.

As far as Im concerned that film (and any sequels, spin-offs, etc) doesnt exist. At this point Nemesis remains the last Star Trek film ever made.

Star Trek: Lensflare did one thing very right - they cast Karl Urban as McCoy. He absolutely nailed the character. I'd welcome seeing him reprise the role in a good movie some day.

I was a hard-core fan of TNG, a little less so (but still much) of DS9, and of course much respect to TOS.

Voyager can suck my gigantic Jewish schlong.

Here's the thing about Star Trek: It should NEVER be pandering, but it should ALWAYS be sexy! It's important for Trek to capture the public imagination, and turn it toward the stars, and optimism, and faith in technology, and above all, faith in the human race. That's what Roddenberry created.

Star Treks I - IV and VI were fantastic in that regard. (We won't even talk about V.) Star Treks VII - X were all "What is this I don't even." They plain sucked ass. Removing things from the canon at will, using great characters like Data, Spock, Kirk and the Borg to do incredibly cheesy shiat... just awful.

Star Trek XI restores the feeling of excitement. JJ Abrams, as much as he's an action director at heart, didn't do to Star Trek what Michael Bay did to the Transformers.

He did to Star Trek what Gene Roddenberry did to the world. He rescued Star Trek, if only for one movie.

No falcon punches. Let's see where this all goes.
