I'm sure the competition's gonna be... rough.

Okay, great. Where???

/i need to know this.. most of the really good street food I get in Midtown from these type of operations have good websites as to where they're going to be that day.

//that lobster roll guy over off of Bryant Park is awesome

Was it over when the Japs dogged Vancouver?

2012-01-07 04:42:48 PM
I will add to this; there is nothing better than getting a Sabrett dog... with just mustard.

/warning: only for people who know what a NYC dirty dog tastes like:p

Anybody else read the headline as "Japadong?"

Japadog rules.

The Japadog cart was right outside of our hotel in Vancouver, and we had it more than once.

I'll stick with the tried and true dirty water dogs.

Vancouver's world-famous "Japadog"

Never heard of it, not even when I was in Vancouver.

Lt. Col. Angus: Japadog rules.

The Japadog cart was right outside of our hotel in Vancouver, and we had it more than once.

I, also, approve of Japadog. The downtown cart I ate at repeatedly during my visit seemed kinda touristy (quite possibly the same one you visited), but since it was awesome I'm willing to overlook that. Terimayo FTW.

2012-01-07 05:50:33 PM
I tried it out a couple of years back and thought it was pretty good, although I don't get downtown enough, and the Japadogs aren't a big enough draw for me to just go downtown. They are kinda expensive, and for the most part, are basically hot dogs with Japanese style condiments (Japanese mayonnaise, Nori flakes, Teriyaki sauce, etc.), but for what I'm paying, I'd rather just have sushi.

I guess I'll just say it since Fark never seems to stop hating on Chicago.

Our hotel was at the corner of Robson and Burrard, so that's probably the one. Doesn't get more touristy than that.

Cripes, I need to get back to Vancouver.

Well, considering New York has the most digusting street hot dogs I've ever encountered, I doubt Japadog has to be that good to beat them.

Seriously - boiled hot dogs? With only mustard and ketchup? What the hell?

Even in Toronto - which is overall a street-food wasteland - the hot dogs (and sausages) are at least grilled and come with a wide variety of condiments (sauerkraut, bacon bits, and olives are all standardly available).

If you're going to a standard hot dog cart, you're getting something really basic. Which is fine if that's all you want, but you can do *much* better cart/truck wise.

As for hot dogs in Manhattan, go ______ Papaya if you want something basic and Crif Dogs if you want something more adventurous. Done deal.

Only if it is the old recipe. The new sabretts that I get locally are nothing like the older recipe.

Seriously - the older sabrett recipe was great. The new one is not so.
Usingers or Meisfields natural casings are the better dogs now. A local distributer that used to carry sabretts dropped them after the buy out and formula change.

Best hot dog in the world is from a place called Hirams in Fort Lee NJ. Dog on a bun, with a little raw onion and mustard.

/2 with a Schiltz on tap is part of my NJ food tour.

Last time I was in Vancouver there were a ton of other carts trying to get in on the action. Mexidog, some Italian hot dog cart and another one that I think was trying to be the UN of hotdogs. Never saw anyone buy a single dog from any of them. The line at the Japadog cart however was always down the street. Probably would have been quicker to walk over to the English Bay store front.

Japadogs sound DELICIOUS!

I'll try anything twice. The first time is to get past the gag reflex ;)

The Sutton Place?

I'm not a huge fan of Japadog, but they are very popular. Up until about two years ago, mobile venders were only allowed to sell hot dogs or nuts (and drinks). Japadog was an ingenious way to capitalize on Vancouver's obsession with Japanese food while fitting in with city bylaws. It was a good idea, and they are doing very well for themselves.

Recently, Vancouver has changed the laws around mobile vendors selling food. Some of the city's best foods can be found in food carts.

Japadog is a manufactured non-entity in Vancouver culture and cuisine.

Lived here all my life, and never heard of the bloody thing until the Olympics, and media started hyping up street vendors for some reason. Locals were perplexed that this thing became a big sensation with tourists. Never eaten there. Never will eat there.

I have a policy about street vendors.

/they never wash their hands
