He "had a disagreement" with his family and blew them off for THIRTY-FIVE YEARS, leaving them to imagine God knows what happening to him? Like a previous poster said, unless there was some absolutely foul shiat going on, they didn't deserve that. (And frankly, the guy sounded like a jerk -- if something really nasty had been going on, I didn't get the impression that he would conceal it to protect them or anything like that). If you really can't stand your family that much, tell them you won't be there at Thanksgiving, move across the country if you want, don't give them your contact info if you're really determined to cut the cord, but at least give them a ring every now and then to let them know you're not rotting in some serial killer's basement.

/going through a divorce, hmm? Hope there weren't any kids involved. If there were, I hope they collect every cent of back child support from this guy's egomaniacal ass.

Exactly.

Knowing your family member decided willingly to "disappear" is one thing. Believing they were murdered by some sadistic clown-fark is a completely different story. This guy is a grade-A selfish asshole.

"I believe Christmas has come early for the Szal family," Sheriff Dart said. "Being able to tell an 88-year-old father that his son, whose picture he has been carrying around for 34 years in his breast pocket, has been found alive is something special."

I am sure that is special. Nothing would make me more happy to find out my father wasn't murdered...instead he just didn't give a shiat about you.

Am I the only one who read this as a hilariously sarcastic comment and not as an argument against the death penalty?

Wow -- skipped right over that. And, looking back, the mods blew it big time. Five Gacy links submitted on 12/21, and none of them greenlighted.

Unless there's a Jerry Sandusky in his family, "selfish" doesn't even approach describing what this asshole is.

came here to say this this and MORE FARKING THIS

and he disappeared while going through a divorce? was it so he didnt have to pay support/child support?
farktard needs to go to jail for this kind of BS

Because this totally nullifies the fact that Gacy had a 26-person cemetery under his home.

I agree that just because this one person wasn't killed, it doesn't negate all the other people he did kill. I'm opposed to the death penalty for and entire separate reason, the people who have been found innocent or could have been found innocent due to DNA evidence and other new investigative technologies. I'm not talking about CGI "enhance grid 34" shiat but you know what I mean. And the fact that in theory, we're supposed to be better than the criminals we prosecute.

skinink: Selfish turd? Unless you really know what was going on with his divorce and his relationship with his family, the knee jerk reaction that he's selfish is going overboard. Maybe it was for the best he put distance between himself and his problems or do you guys not read enough stories about people murdering their family members then committing suicide?
He said he had a disagreement with his family. So he did what he thought was best.

I disagree. He had to have known that they believed he was one of Gacy's victims and that since he disappeared around the same time his family would believe he was murdered. In the article it said he had a past history of disappearing for periods of time and then coming back. It just sounds very selfish that he couldn't at least have sent an unaddressed letter telling them he was alive.

"[The police] have been asking anyone who believes to submit DNA samples to see if they match any of the unidentified victims"

Anyone who 'believes'?

So just go to every Church on Sunday and take their saliva from the cup and boom...you've not only got a database of people that Gacy DIDN'T kill, but also good CSI-esque info to check against in future pedophile cases.

Of course it doesn't nullify it, but there have been people who are accused, jailed and even executed for crimes they did not commit because of circumstance, mistaken testimony, convienience, generally being a scapegoat, family wants someone punished etc.I seriously think families testimony should be stricken from the record in non witnessed crimes. Yes, it's horrible that you suffered, but does that mean the first person standing trial should be convicted based on that suffering? How about just letting the rest of the case speak fairly rather then what could be an emotional rush to judgement.

Knowing nothing, and being cyncial, I wonder how much of that is due to "dump the cold case on the nearest serial killer" syndrome in which police departments "clear" their cold cases by attributing them to a serial killer.

None if those linkswere paid for. Plus, "old news" guarantees at least 10I "old news" replies, thus upping the click count, thereby increasing revenues.

let me ask this question:

if you were to decide to drop off the radar and estrange yourself from your family, is there a way to find out whether or not your family has decided that you were murdered? short of calling them and asking?

fusillade762: So if everyone thought he was dead, how was this guy supporting himself? It is my understanding that in order to get a job (or a loan or a number of other things) you need to identify yourself. Did this dude steal somebody else's identity or something?

His family thought he was dead; that doesn't mean the US government said "Okie dokie, we will take your hunch as irrefutable fact and erase this guy from existence". There is a process to go through to declare someone dead sans a corpse. If no one actually did that, it isn't like the Social Security guys go around asking people"Have any relative you believe are dead? Cause we'll totally delete him from the system cause you think he might be". And they would be especially loath to do it while some guy with all the correct identifiers is using the number. You are in no way required to keep up with relatives - you can move at will, and this is totally fine with the law. IIRC, even if your relatives do send the posse after you, all you have to do is tell the cops you don't want to be in contact, and all the LEOs can say is that you are alive. For all the "libertarians uber alles" that permeates Fark, it is suprising that so many of you basically want this guy executed for not being at the end of a leash 3 feet long. He might not have even known he was a supposed victim - it wasn't like every paper carried every detail of every facet of the Gacy story - the major things, yes, but Oregon probably didn't give enough of a toss to concern itself with making sure every name of every possible victim ran on the front page for several weeks running (my God, it was people dying in Illinois for fark's sake; Oregon wouldn't care until they could cheer on a real extermination attempt, not this hinkie-dinkie amateur-hour shiat)

Some people don't respect that. You can blunty tell them I don't want you in my life, even though you're family, but they'll find a way to guilt trip themselves back into your life.

awkward.

basically he doesnt even want to speak to them..... even more awkward.
