He "had a disagreement" with his family and blew them off for THIRTY-FIVE YEARS, leaving them to imagine God knows what happening to him? Like a previous poster said, unless there was some absolutely foul shiat going on, they didn't deserve that. (And frankly, the guy sounded like a jerk -- if something really nasty had been going on, I didn't get the impression that he would conceal it to protect them or anything like that). If you really can't stand your family that much, tell them you won't be there at Thanksgiving, move across the country if you want, don't give them your contact info if you're really determined to cut the cord, but at least give them a ring every now and then to let them know you're not rotting in some serial killer's basement.
