He's right, everyone shouldn't go to college. There's simply no need for it. A lot of people just don't have the brains for it. I don't think he's entirely wrong, although he is an asshole. Increasing the number of college graduates would not necessarily be a good idea- I mean, there are a lot more of them now than there were in previous decades, yet we still don't live in a utopia for some reason. Improving the quality of education is something I could definitely get behind, however (incidentally, this would probably actually decrease the number of graduates), and I also think a lot of work needs to be done to make higher education available to anyone who is capable and deserving. Aside from that, the world needs plenty of bartenders, factory workers, etc., but they need to be paid a living wage, which I'm sure is a concept that would outrage Santorum.

We can have a large population of college graduates, but where the economic stability lies is within those technical positions that always need workers: mechanics, plumbers, electricians, and so on. If some guy barely squeaks through high school, why in the hell would he want to go to college? It's better to get him in a technical program (preferably while in high school), and train him so he can enter the workforce immediately, and still have enough time to advance as far in his field as he wants. The U.S. needs more tech program graduates than English majors.

I believe apprenticeships actually required you provide some room and board. Also skilled craftsmen belonged to guilds, which are like unions (some unions even use the word Guild) so that's socialism.

Nope, we'll find the unpaid internship as the training method of the future. And forget about getting a second job, Gingrich wants to replace janitors with children already, don't think that job list won't expand to every low skill position.

Obama's actual words were "College and career ready". And most of those tech jobs require some college (community college is college). Some can be done through high school tech programs, but Santorum seems to think any idiot can open an engine fresh out of high school. Given the rapid changes brought on by hybrid engines and computerization it's going to take more than a high school shop class to achieve a decent paying mechanic job.
