If beatings continue until morale improves, how many times will I have to hit you?!

2012-01-07 04:14:23 PM
What the fark?

2012-01-07 04:15:49 PM
That legitimate math! What's all the fuss about?

2012-01-07 04:15:50 PM
Let me guess, said parent's or parents' snowflake(s) are failing the class and need any excuse to blame the teacher or school for their shortcomings?

2012-01-07 04:15:55 PM
Wow. I can't believe anybody could be this stupid.

The answer is 14.

2012-01-07 04:20:16 PM
That depends.

Do we have to factor in whether he looks like a biatch or not?

Wow, people must live extra long in Georgia

Not enough if they're gonna keep snitching to the parents. Time for more math, junior!!!

There are times where I feel I cannot be more surprised by my home state, and then stuff like this happens.

Oh, those bitter "memories" of what happened to your great-great-great-great-grandparents.

Math without conscience or thought about what numbers relate too. Perfect for big investment firms and goby code breakers

The next question on the test was to multiply 5 black men times 1 white woman,

2012-01-07 04:22:38 PM
So, I'm guessing that the teachers or responsible parties were black, else we would be reading more outrage at how whitey could write such things. Not that it matters.

So much stupid here, I don't even know where to begin.

"Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Now this is a question that would have driven me crazy as a student. "Each tree" suggests that there were numerous trees, but that part of the question is left to the student to ponder. So, do I make my calcuilations based on one tree or assume any number of trees of my choice?

Teachers can be so confusing sometimes.

Thats a pretty clueless school district

However we are talking Georgia here so I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

Another Beaver Ridge parent, Terrance Barnett, said, "I'm having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slave or beatings is in a math problem. So that hurts."

Math or explaining slavery to your kid? 'Cuz as hard as it is, both should be talked about at some point.

Just write X per Y. Seven per tree in this example. Didn't bother me that much in school...

That answer is 7t where t = number of trees. You went to public school, didn't you.

Sorry, but you forgot to take into account that each slave only counts as 3/5 a person.

FTA:Such questions can evoke bitter memories in Georgia, where African Americans were enslaved for generations until the Civil War and the elimination of slavery.

You can not evoke any sort of memory that you do not have.

Also there's no mention of when white people were basically enslaved in feudal Europe for generations "paying off" family debts. Or Greek enslaving their own people due to debt.

2012-01-07 04:34:48 PM
When I taught elementary and middle school, I found black students from middle- and upper-class families were woefully short of knowledge about slavery, Massive Resistance and segregation. "Old stuff the old people talk about." "I never experienced any of that." "It never happened where I live." Their parents mostly said they they did not want their children to know about those things because they were "not like those people". WTF?

I just bought the textbook for my grad level abstract algebra class.

The cover is a stylized face of a sad person crying.

Math: it's not for cupcakes.

They don't learn that until they get to fractions.

Seeing as the math problem mentioned oranges, how do we know the slaves weren't Korean held by other Chinese masters?

As for the "memories", they have to keep bringing up slavery to keep it relevant and keep the guilt alive. Without the guilt, the free money dries up.

I'm usually firmly against whining parents, but how did ANYONE think this would be OK?

If I was a parent, I wouldn't be concerned about the questions as much as I'd be concerned that my child's teacher is as dumb as dogshiat.

I don't think math problems featuring slaves is really a good way to teach the history of slavery.

2012-01-07 04:49:44 PM
Actually, I know exactly how this happened. This district requires all classes "cross teach" or integrate other subjects. So, science has to include something like geography (if 4 grams of gold from California is mixed with 2 grams of copper from Colorado...), or spelling has to include literature (the spelling list is the name of famous authors). This is just some math teacher trying to include some US history so they don't get penalized for failing to include another subject.

Every 2 or 3 years this school system ditches whatever they have been doing and start all over again with the latest craze. This way it is impossible to compare how the schools are doing over time since they are always just starting or ending another program and you cannot compare across them since they are each measuring different objectives.

What if the question was: "if you have an oven that holds 10 Jews and you need to incinerate 90, how many times would you have to fill the oven?" would that upset anyone?

Start factoring in how much more profit you can make by whipping the men and raping the women as punishment-incentive. Then add the children from those rapes into your work force for additional labor and profit.

When you come down to it, slavery is all about numbers.

Safest answer would be 0%. Did I pass?

Two.

Next day he brought a gun to school and shot the bastards that beat him yesterday.
