Really?

Forcing your body to contort to unnatural positions under the tutelage of enthusiastic armatures with no education in kinesiology could cause injury?

NO WAY!

So if you self medicate you can hurt yourself? Stop the presses!

Yoga taken to extremes is likely to cause injury. Never stretching your muscles at all is even more likely to cause injury. Everything in moderation, this isn't exactly rocket science we're talking about.

2012-01-07 05:41:28 PM
yes.

unless, maybe if you find some kind of yoga that uses props and one on one instuction to carefully guide you through simple poses and, most importantly recognise limitations due to injury. If you do have an injury, especially some kind of spinal injury yoga seems to me a BAD idea.

You mean fat, unfit people can injure themselves attempting complex physical contortions?

2012-01-07 05:46:19 PM
I have nerve damage, I do yoga. I do the poses that don't hurt and my yoga instructors give me modified poses that stretch the same muscles without aggravating my injury. It's not rocket science, it's common sense.

As the article says, there are yoga instructors and enthusiasts who see the exercises as "competition" and push themselves past the point of injury.

Then, in 2007, while doing the extended-side-angle pose, a posture hailed as a cure for many diseases, my back gave way. With it went my belief, naïve in retrospect, that yoga was a source only of healing and never harm.

Yep - naive.

Glenn Black had consensual sex with and did not harm a girl in 1990.

I do yoga all the time, I find that it helps significantly with flexibility and muscle tone. Some of the poses are very difficult to hold.

I'm not sure what particular brand of naïvety would let you think that it could cure anything besides weak muscles.

This is the book I use. Interestingly, it has 114 reviews and five full stars. It really seems to be a safe, middle-of-the-road kind of approach. For me, it's all about relaxing and focusing when I have difficulty getting through a pose. The monkey mind tends to not to want to sit there and do something constructive, but feels it would be better to get back to the TV or Fark. (;

No no no no!
Yoga isn't just excercise it's got a spiritual component that lets us get our dhangras close to our bhungas, just like the wise and groovy gurus of ancient times did, thus enabling them to lift heavy stones and drink their own urine.
You're not simply stretching and excercising, you're aligning chakras, peppering paprikas and helping your body rid itself of toxins.
Where these people are going wrong is failing to consult their astrological charts before beginning their regime.

Mmm... upside-down dog, baby.

All right, I'll ask it...How many of these "yoga injuries" are caused by guys trying to blow themselves?

It sounds about right. Why not cast off the shackles of this tired western existence in to a life filled with endorphines repairing your deeply torn muscles and tendons from seeing your anus from 2 inches away, yet not being able to suck yourself off...

I am all for folks getting exercise and being happy. When that involves you buying into an exercise cult and having lawsuits over WHO figured out how to stretch "that way" (Bikram IP). The folks that generally adopt this lifestyle will be the last ones to "get it" anyway. If you just moved out of Burberry Mimosaville and into the country, you can work your ass off having a garden that produces more than microgreens and amazingly you may find balance from a day of actual hard physical work and still get the benefits of your all organic garden for pennies on the dollar compared to Whole Paycheck. It is amazing the amount of "meditation" one can do while weeding beets (you can sweat in the sun Bikram style too). You'll feel like reading and responding to less email and once you catch your first fish and understand what fishing is all about (the fishing not the catching), then you'll be feeling a little better about life. Your back may hurt from your wallet being fat from not launching money into the Eastern Wellness and Homeopathic market that Hallmark sold to Walmart last year. You'll have to wait until Walmart sells it to Target or Ikea for it to be PC enough to buy from a big box again lol.

I tried yoga with videos & books, but the problem was that I can't really see what I'm doing and couldn't tell if I was doing it right. I found a local place that focused solely on yoga with experienced, certified instructors. I found out I was doing everything wrong.

I highly recommend anyone wanting to get into yoga at least take a basic intro class with and instructor certified from one of the major schools (Bickram, Iyengar, etc..) for no other reason than to have someone verify that you are doing the poses correctly and aren't going to hurt yourself.

Some of even the basic poses can really screw up your joints if you don't do them correctly.

Yoga is wonderful, but you need someone trained to teach you how to do it- like any other physical activity.

As always, take care.

THIS.

I was in a horrible car accident as a teenager that left me with a broken back, and fractures in nearly all of my limbs. After undergoing years of physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, and more pills than I ever care to remember, yoga is the only thing that helps me. If I don't practice at least 3 times per week I can't sleep, I can't move - I can barely function.

But I've also never tried to push my body further than it wanted. Any intelligent person should be able to tell the difference between discomfort and pain. Discomfort = good, pain = bad. It's not hard to figure out.

The serious injuries in this article almost all stem from extreme practices and habits. I'm left with a resounding "meh" and will be at my yoga class tomorrow morning at 9am.

Yeah and putting a finger in someone's vagina is "intercourse" or "rape". depending on whether they filled out the enclosed affadavit stating whether such an action was requested. AND signed in triplicate. By the 3 heads of state.

I have ankylosing spondylitis (a form of spinal arthritis), and yoga is one of the few things that has helped my pain and stiffness. It also gives me some exercise since I can't do anything high-impact anymore (I used to be a workout fiend and especially loved to dance - I still miss it every freakin' day). I started doing yoga in college because I needed three credits and a physical education requirement, and every other PE course was only two credits. I wound up loving it, and it's really what kicked off my interest in nutrition and health.

I was healthy back then, but I've had to modify certain poses because of my back (and because of coordination problems I've recently started having), and any good instructor will work with you on modifications and making sure that you don't push yourself too hard. Yoga has benefited me mentally as well as physically, and all that stretching feels pretty damn good.

Yes. Yoga can mess you up if you try to force yourself into positions that hurt when you start doing them. Yoga is about listening to your body. If you pay attention and don't try to twist or bend or whatever in a way you know you can't, you'll be fine. Idiots. Yes, yoga will hurt you if you ignore your body when it says, "Hey, stop doing this! PAIN SIGNALS! PAIN SIGNALS!" It's the same with any other thing. Baseball. Soccer. Swimming. Driving a car. Drinking water. If you're an idiot, you're going to hurt yourself.
