I'm glad they didn't show a picture of the temple because my imagination made it way cooler than anything that could possibly exist. I praise media outlets that encourage our imaginations.

Maybe the humans built temples to worship the orcs?

No matter, the Orcs would still find them tasty.

Let me be the first to congratulate subby for inverting a worn-out headline meme into something that's both topical and funny.

"THE discovery of a Stone Age temple on Orkney looks set to rewrite the archeological records..."

[click]

No it isn't, and you're a fool for suggesting that.

Every time a science journalist claims that some discovery is going to "rewrite," "overturn," "fundamentally change," or "shake the foundations of" some science, you can be 100% certain that the journalist is an idiot who has absolutely no idea what s/he is talking about.

Every time.

It's the one absolutely certain rule of science journalism.

You forgot to biatch about the archaeologist designating the site as probably religious. That cliche is almost as bad.

Orkney is one of my favorite places on the planet. I've been several times. I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone. The best time to go is during the St. Magnus Festival. Good food, good entertainment, lots of sights.

Tautology.

I saw a documentary on this - they really didn't provide any information that seemed to point to it being a temple rather than just a settlement where people lived (Come on - with the winds you get up there, I'd think they built the wall just as a windbreak)

We've actually been up to Orkney recently and Brodgar was one of our afternoons up there. There are structures and civilizations on Orkney that far predate Stonehenge anyway, so this isn't a huge surprise. I guess the fact that it's a 'temple' makes it significant.

I wonder if they'll find some ancient graffiti in the area? "King Lot and sons were here!"

Romanes Eunt Domus: I wonder if they'll find some ancient graffiti in the area? "King Lot and sons were here!"

There's a lot of Viking graffiti in the Maes Howe tomb, just down the road a bit:

"Ingebjork the fair widow - many a woman has walked stooping in here a very showy person" signed by "Erlingr"
"Thorni f*cked. Helgi carved" (the official guidebooks usually tone this inscription down)
"Ingigerth is the most beautiful of all women" (carved beside a rough drawing of a slavering dog)
