Awful convenient, those Iranians letting themselves get captured like that.

Someone cue up photos from the ST:TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" (I think) where the Enterprise-C saves a Klingon outpost from Romulans and prevents full-scale war...

Ridiculous! How am I going to dehumanize our evil brown enemy if they act human? Stop confusing America!

2012-01-07 01:44:40 PM
Yes, Fox reported it. This means that we can expect the rest of the MSM to report it ten to twelve months from now.

Hey moron, take a look at the submitter's headline. If you missed THAT, you're pretty much screwed already. Hang your head in shame - you're a bad representation of conservitards. Or are you a PERFECT representation? Decorum prevents me from stating my decision.

So because FOX reported it, that means it didn't happen, right? The bombing starts in 5 minutes?

Interesting how the articles on this don't really say Iran "thanks" the US, while news websites seem to be skewing it to imply that.

2012-01-07 01:49:45 PM
Oh, and now I suppose they'll get us a nice gift basket with dried fruits and gourmet candy and we're all just supposed to say la-dee-da. Well I want my third world war dammit!

2012-01-07 01:55:09 PM
I'm thinking this is less about geopolitics, and more about how fellow sailors treat one another.

Gee...it's a shame the big, bad Iranian Navy couldn't handle it on their own.

The Foreign Ministry and Fars are sending out conflicting messages.

Probably because Iran is a pretty conflicted country.

2012-01-07 02:01:03 PM
Well of course they said thanks. What, do you think they'd say something to make themselves look like idiots in the eyes of the rest of the world?

oukewldave: Interesting how the articles on this don't really say Iran "thanks" the US, while news websites seem to be skewing it to imply that.

A spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Ramin Mehmanparast, had positive words about the rescue when he spoke Saturday to the Arabic news network Al-Alam.

"Rescuing Iranian sailors by the U.S. was a humanitarian act and we welcome such acts," he said. "The Iranian Navy also engages in such rescue operations. It is the responsibility of all nations to rescue nationals from other countries from pirates."

Especially ironic since threatening to hold hostage the international commercial ships through the straight of hormuz is essentially piracy.

Fools! This is exactly what they want! Don't you see?! Social psychology states that one of the best ways to get someone to like you is to have them do you a favor. In having done you a favor they will subconsciously question why they did you a favor in the first place. If there is no clear reason why this will cause cognitive dissonance which can only be dispelled by concluding that you must have done the favor because you liked the person to begin with. Nice try Iran! You won't trick me into being friends.

The captured pirates were put on board the Stennis while authorities considered prosecuting them.

You know what? Screw it, just hand them over to the Iranians.

If they had their whole navy out doing drills, why didn't they go over there and save them theirself?

good to know that some countries can put aside political differences for a moment to do what is right in a moment of need.

The irony is, I sort of side with the pirates here. Foreign fishermen keep coming into somolia and wrecking their sovereign fishing grounds because there is no somolia government to protect them. Some somolias are legit pirates for money but others are just trying to protect their livelihoods

I said it before and I'll say it again. The United States Navy is in the business of protecting international waters. This is thier job and they do it well. Go Navy!

I am intrigued by your proposal and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Actually I think this kind of mirrors the rather gentelmanly relationship between the us navy and it's Russian counterparts during the cold war.
Saber rattling on land, vodka toasts and coarse jokes on the water.

Funny you should mention that. Here's an article (pdf warning) by a dude from where I used to intern that touches on that exact topic. It's about how practical working arrangements like Incidents At Sea (INCSEA) Agreements are crucial to preventing a bad relationship from becoming a full blown war.
