Didn't see the debate. Did see the headline on TPM about Perry calling for the invasion and reoccupation of Iraq. LOLed.

I have to imagine some Iraqi militant group is working the Perry clip into their next propaganda video, flyer, or broadcast, followed by a clip accusing whichever party or faction they oppose of being in league with the former occupiers, just hear what that top politician and candidate for president said!

Huntsman is the only relatively sane person on that stage and the most credible threat to Obama. Thankfully, the Derp Squad doesn't like him because he speaks Japanese and must be one of those Japanese communists.

Well, except for those uppitty elitist ones who think that everyone ought to have some schooling...

At this point, I think it's a race to see who won't be elected. The nomination seems to be like the proverbial hot potato that no one really wants but everyone got convinced they should play, because it would make them seem more "fun" at parties...

jso2897: meyerkev: Party Boy: "There's no class in America"

Is this guy farking serious?

Depends.

Do we have rich people and poor people? And by virtue of having literal tons of money, can the rich people have opportunities that those who are poorer than them don't? Yes.

Do we have aristocrats? People who are considered better solely because of who their parents or grandparents were? People who no matter what their circumstance are considered better than all the commoners around them? Not really..

Well, in a certain sense, we do - we call them "celebrities".

True. Though most (not all*) celebrities were successful at something (usually acting) by themselves. We read a tabloid article on [Random Celebrity], not [Random Person who's sole claim to fame was that his or her Grandmother was Random Celebrity].

Even G. W. Bush managed to win his various political offices on the strength of his own (somewhat dubious) merits, not because "Hey, my dad was George Bush Sr, therefore I am ENTITLED to be President/Governor of Texas." Not denying that being a Bush helped (positive memories of father on behalf of some voters, already existing political structures and relationships for him to inherit, etc, etc), but it wasn't the sole or even main reason that Bush was President.

We don't say "Because your father was a general (or insert office here), you will be a general, no matter how incompetent you are" or "Because your father wasn't a general, you can't be a general." It helps if your father was a general, but it's NOT required and just because your parents were something doesn't mean you're ENTITLED to be that same something. That's the point.

*I have a certain sneaky respect for the not all.

Thats a whole lot of caveats.

Since you claim to know a sole/main reasons, I would like to see your breakdown of "main" reason(s) and why you want to dismiss heredity as "less important" for your original claim of

Yeah, you're right. In fact, the other day, when I was having lunch with my friends, Liza Minelli, Tori Spelling, Hank Williams Jr. and Paris Hilton, I said to Paris: "Yknow Paris, the great thing about this country is that you have to make it on your own here. You can't just coast your way to fame and fortune on your parents accomplishments". :D

Pretty much. Huntsman is talking about his record and declining to really comment on the others, saying they can speak for themselves. And Perry is standing in the corner grinning like an imbecile.

That's something Perry is good at.

Hey, come on. We've only had six-plus months to find out what the candidates want for the country. There are many sensible, well-read people who remain undecided as to which candidate is least moran. The remaining undecided are not at all moran themselves.

You're kidding, right? Prior to be elected governor of Texas, Shrub's career consisted entirely of running a couple of oil companies into the ground (oil companies handed over to him by his father's friends) and operating the Texas Rangers (which succeeded only because Daddy's political connections allowed him to drum up public funding for a new stadium).

But let's look at some other examples: Would anyone ever buy a Hank Williams, Jr. record if his name was Oliver Taintlicker? Would anyone anywhere, ever, have given Paulie Shore a job of any kind if his mother wasn't a tastemaker in the L.A. comedy scene? Even genuinely talented people - think of Bill Gates - have relied on their parentage to launch their careers. The family you're born into has a bigger influence than any other factor on your eventual professional success, because it opens all sorts of doors that are closed to others (remember the old saying - you don't go to Harvard to get a better education than you could get elsewhere; you go to Harvard to meet people who went to Harvard).

Intrade has Obama at 50.4% to be elected president in 2012. So there's a somewhat decent chance that one of those people will be president-elect this time next year. It behooves one to pay some attention to it.

The WWE thread from Monday, which got twice the comments. And that's something that literally means nothing plus the outcome is preordained.

I don't think that necessarily follows though. When the GOP actually has a candidate, then that number will be meaningful. For now it's just Obama vs. generic Republican.

...and Huntsman would be dead on. All it would take for China to absolutely annihilate us if we did something so patently stupid as introduce heavy tariffs on their goods is shortsell US treasuries on the global market, preferably to countries like Russia or OPEC. China's been working overtime to expand trade relations with Russia, so they have a viable market that's not us to prop up their economy in the short term.

The Establishment GOP desperately hopes so.

In truth, they won't calm down. Herman Cain is only the latest to add fuel to their political fire and once Newt is officially rejected, he'll head down the same path, fanning the Tea derper flames.

They settled for Sarah Palin in the VP spot the last time around and the fool girl made them believe that it was McCain that cost them election and if she'd been the Presidential nominee, they'd have beaten Obama easily.

This time around, I don't think they're going to settle for a VP spot for their Tea derper. They're going to demand the big seat and when they don't get it, I fully expect them to run a third party campaign.

At which time, Karl Rove's head will explode.

It's not about the actual probabilities of certain outcomes. It's about getting the proper amount of money on each side of the bet so that no matter what the outcome you use the losers to pay the winners and keep the juice.

Example: Say there are 1000 trailer park repubs who bet one unit to win .95 units with one smart person betting 1000 units to win 950 units. Both bet the line with a 95% return if they win. Either way the bookie takes 1000 units of losses and pays out 950 units in winnings, keeping the other 50 units. This yields a 2.5% hold (50 units held out of 2000 units total action)
