Meh. Revive Space Simulator and I'll be impressed

...And the Flight Simulator community will still keep using FS9.. the last version that was stable, could be run on a computer an actual human could buy and still has massive 3rd party modding support.

Hey, hey, I still play Train Simulator!

2012-01-07 09:16:37 AM
Need a new version of combat flight sim.

Is subby very, very, very obtusely referring to this?

That meme on the headline. I don't think it means what subby thinks it means.

FTA: The game needs a minimum of 10GB of hard drive space, a dual-core 2Ghz processor, Windows XP SP3 and 2GB of RAM.

THESE SPECS ARE ABSOLUTELY WALLET BREAKING! WHO CAN AFFORD A 10GIG HD? ALSO WHAT IS THIS DUAL CORE TECHNOLOGY THAT IS COMMON IN EVERY RETAIL COMPUTER IT SOUNDS LIKE IT COSTS A LOT OF MONEY!? 2 GIGS OF RAM TOO!? OH MAN THAT RIGHT THERE IS A 1,000 DOLLAR MACHINE! SO MUCH RAGE!!!!!!11!2

Someone clearly never tried to run FSX on the recommended specs.

Last one I remember playing with was Flight Simulator 4. No, not 2004, just 4.

They'll have a boat load of DLC.. Nothing is free.

You missed my point, and looking at the video they showed the minimum should be enough to run the game. Those graphics aren't exactly groundbreaking.

When you consider that most machines running Vista and above at retail have 4 gigs of ram, a faster processor and a 250gig HD these specs are nothing.

Although, if you're smart and you seriously game you have a gaming machine built and it didn't cost anywhere near what Best Buy sells. A higher end rig shouldn't hit you too hard on the wallet. If that's too much there's always the barebone kit options which for the most part now include at least 2.0ghz+ tricore if not an even stronger processor.

That would be the promotional video Microsoft produced? You really aren't very good at detecting misleading propaganda are you...

You lose.

FSX just barely plays smooth on modern gaming hardware at 1920x1080 w/ everything set to high.. It was the worst coded game every and doesn't scale well to modern hardware at all. So.. Yeah.. I'm on team "This will run like shiat"

Neither are you. I highly doubt with those minimum specs that it will strain your computer seeing as those specs are weaker than an Xbox 360 (Xbox runs 3.2ghz tricore and while it doesn't have RAM I'm sure it would be sitting at least 3gigs of ram). You're also complaining about a free game.

On a final note, if you mod a game chances are you're playing on a gaming machine anyway. Then you know that the rig you built didn't leave you for broke as is.

Didn't come here to be all snarky, but that video is for a *very* good looking flight simulator.

In 2002.

They aren't giving the game away, they are giving away a demo with the option to turn it into the full game for a price.

It sounds like Microsoft will be aimed at a more casual experience, to try and bring people into the flight sim genre. Perhaps they're conceding the hard core market to X-Flight or whatever it's called.

I can't complain too much, because somewhere in the early 2000s the genre died.

/misses Sierra-Dynamix and the Aces series

2012-01-07 10:42:55 AM
X-Plane is alright but dated graphically. There is FlightGear also which again, outdated graphics but it is free.

As of right now the best pure out flight sim for home users is easily DCS AC-10C.. Just watch the startup sequence. It's button flicking, button turning, gauge watching heaven.

I'd be happier if they brought back Train Simulator. Update the graphics a bit to include the BNSF "Swoosh" logo and maybe include some eastern RRs (Norfolk Southern, CSX, et al.) as well as add some routes and additional loads for those of us who would like some variety.

Oh, Satanic_Hamster, I just found Railworks Train Sim. I haven't opened it up yet, but that time is drawing near...

I always wondered why I couldn't make a coal train with 5 engines and over 100 cars. That sounds like it would be fun.

I'm getting it because the plane available is the Icon A5. It's a very sweet looking plane, and, since I'm on the wait list for when they start production, I'm getting a kick. I've always liked the idea of having my own purpose build amphib, not just floats on a 172 or 206.

//probably won't get my plane until at least 2013

You know, cause if this Flight Simulator doesn't sell well, Microsoft might be in some real trouble as a company.

Or you could buy an Intel processor that won't catch fire, requires less air being pushed over it and thus is somewhat quieter than the nearest airport.

CSB.

Had an Athlon XP 1700+ that couldn't keep itself cool no matter how big n' nasty a heatsink and fans I bolted to the sucker. It was fine for a while but after that yee gods and little fishes; but talking to people I'm not alone in that experience.
Then had an Athlon64 laptop that got hot enough to melt the underside... despite it living on a desk and the fans going flat out all the time.

endCSB.

So you suck with computers and can't attach a heatsink. My parents probably can't attach a heatsink either. Probably.

Came here to say this. Most "free" games these days have inherit costs on the side. Be it microtransactions or DLC.

Hell yes, it would be fun! Especially getting it down the mountains of Eastern PA or West Virginia. That'd be a lot of fun. A royal challenge, I'd imagine, but it would be fun.

On a related note, what happened to that nice fellow who blamed 9/11 on the prevalence of flight simulation software? Is he still working?

OK great, now will someone step up and address the serious lack of dogfighting in modern gaming?

I see my usual "needs more X-wings" complaint has already been made.

I'm still waiting for the Chuck Yeager line to be revived. The last one I had was in the Windows 3.1 era, but being able to pit aircraft from different eras against each other in custom scenarios was so much fun.

2012-01-07 12:32:26 PM
Will it include an option to be felt up by security and then have to wait an hour on the apron for take off?

You can get that, you know. Google "Rogue Synapse" and download it if that's your thing.
