I too wanted more with the narrative. I would have settled for a) violent kneejerk reaction as you suggested b) kid running into bedroom to see gramps jerking it to a Betty Boop comic book or c) the shock of being attacked by the little scamp setting off a heart attack (which nearly appears to have happened.)

grandpa can't fly so they only visit twice a year in spring and fall. sounds like grandpa takes a cheap transatlantic reposition cruise in the spring and fall. here is a newsflash grandpa- cunard goes back and forth constantly between spring and fall on cruises that aren't for reposition.
