Turns out NE had an oddly "weak" schedule this year:
Record against teams above .500:
NE - 0-2
Cin - 1-6
Record against teams .500 and below:
NE - 12-1
Cin - 8-1
Cincinnati could have probably have been 13-3 with NE's schedule too.

For the first time since 93, I get to root for the home team in the playoffs. I just wish I was back home rooting for them instead of stuck in this hotel in San Francisco. Haven't decided if I'm going to go look for a sports bar (since the 49ers aren't playing today) or just sit here today.
Also, Here is some nice photos of the city decked out in team colors last night.

Might be the last time they get posted this year.
And I'm torn about tonight's game. I've been a Saints fan but I was pulling for the Lions since I understand what it's like to have many years of a nothing team. I'm sitting this one off the side and just know it will probably be a hell of a game.

And now as if to taunt me, ESPN shows the clip of the Oilers dropping that epic turd against the Bills in the 4th and allowing them to come back. I was about 12 when that happened and I was so pissed about that, I didn't watch any football for about 2 years.
And judging from the history of the last 2 years of the Oilers while they were in Houston, neither did the rest of the city.

OK, looked it up in more detail on

. Looks like the only one that
might
qualify is Super Bowl XIX, which saw the Miami Dolphins lose to the San Fransisco 49ers in Stanford Stadium.

lol. Then he slapped us in the face by going to Tennessee and then the Super Bowl in 2 years after that. Something that never happened in Houston. I was at one of the last Oilers home game. We all lined up at the ramp Bud Adams came out of and threw bottles and food at him. I'll never forget my dad handing me a half eaten hot dog and told me to aim for the head.
And then we wound up building a new stadium anyway and now the Astrodome sits like an empty shell next to Reliant. They really need to do something with it. My understanding is they don't want to tear it down cause of the history but to get it up to code is WAY too expensive. *Sigh* At some points they wanted to turn it into a casino, a hotel/convention center, an indoor amusement park or a sound studio for movies. And yet, it still just sits there.

CSB.
I was at the first MNF game the Texans hosted against the Jags. Both teams were 4-7 so the game really was pretty meaningless. But holy crap, Reliant was deafeningly loud. If that place got that amped for a game the decided 3rd place in the AFC South, I can only imagine what it would sound like when something is at stake.
End CSB. GO TEXANS!

Night gets better ratings, and they don't want to compete with college games (I believe there are some.)

The regular season has come and gone; the playoffs are upon us. With those playoffs also comes the first annual installment of Harv's Playoff Picks (the capital letters indicate it's important). A bit about my past prognistication qualifications (say that ten times fast)--I have none. My methodology is only half a step above that girl in the office who doesn't even know what a football looks like but who wins the football pool every single week. I take all of my intricate knowledge of the game, combine it with trends and the historic performance of teams and players in specific situations, mull it over for a while, and then usually reject all of it because my gut tells me that the Cleveland Browns can actually pull off the upset against Pittsburgh (guilty), or that the Jets are capable of winning a meaningful game (also guilty). Thus follow my picks for wild card weekend, winners in
bold
.
Cincinnati Bengals at
Houston Texans
:
A healthy Texans team might have been an interesting story in the playoffs, but as is neither of these squads are expected to advance beyond next week (and the only reason one is expected to get that far is that they play each other). Both feature young quarterbacks trying not to lose the game and strong defenses that should keep them in most matchups. The difference-maker here is Arian Foster; despite being held completely in check in their week 14 battle, that pesky gut of mine is telling me that Foster is going to break off a hundred yards and a score on the ground, and that T.J. Yates (who had a very strong game in the prior meeting) will avoid turning the ball over and lead Houston to victory. Cincy got here by beating the teams they were supposed to beat, but it's beyond troubling to note that they went 0-7 against playoff teams during the regular season, including that week 14 loss to the Texans. 16-10 final.
Detroit Lions at
New Orleans Saints
:
Congratulations to the Detroit Lions for ending their long playoff drought. Unfortunately, they could not pull off the week 17 win against Green Bay which would have prevented their having to travel back to New Orleans, where they lost 31-17 in week 13. I don't expect this game to be any closer; the Saints are almost unbeatable at home (actually, they
were
unbeatable this season), where they outscored opponents 329-143. Put into perspective, the Saints scored more points in their 8 home games than 12 other teams scored in
all 16
of their own games. The only way the Lions have any kind of chance is if Matt Stafford can have a career day
and
the defense can pull a few timely turnovers...I just don't see that happening. Final score: 45-21.
Atlanta Falcons
at New York Giants
:
This is where my gut comes into play. Despite the media's sudden love affair with the Giants, which is understandable given that Eli is their only Manning this season, I am a realist who notes a few disturbing facts about the G-men: New York was just 5-7 in conference play, and 0-3 against other NFC playoff teams. The Giants and Broncos are the only two playoff teams to have allowed more points than they scored during the regular season, and New York is ranked 27th in the league in total defense. The Falcons, meanwhile, were able to shut down the Lions in Detroit back in week 7, and held the Saints to just 26 points in a dome game in Atlanta. With all due respect to Eli & Co, the Giants offense is about on par with Detroit on a good week, and several steps behind the Saints. The final nail in the coffin, though, is Eli himself...who has not thrown a touchdown pass in the postseason since winning the Super Bowl 4 years ago. Falcons win 31-27.
Pittsburgh Steelers
at Denver Broncos
:
I've seen quite a few write-ups over the week talking about all the things the Denver defense can do to a banged-up Steeler offense; what I haven't seen is anyone who can explain how the Broncos are going to be able to score against Pittsburgh. Their only realistic shot there is to force turnovers from the gimpy Ben Roethlisberger and/or Isaac Redman. Pittsburgh ranks first in overall defense and eighth against the run, while the Broncos' vaunted defensive unit is only 20th overall and 22nd vs. the ground game. Willis McGahee and Tim Tebow will struggle to move the ball on the ground, and short of divine intervention (admittedly a possibility here), they won't be able to do anything through the air. The only question in my mind is whether or not Denver gets on the scoreboard...I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and call it 20-7.
robsul82
2012-01-07 03:08:12 PM
New Orleans, New York Blue, Houston...I think, I keep going back and forth on that one, and Denver. Nothing personal on that last one, it's just got the stink of Saints/Seahawks all over it.

Not to mention that the Lions receiver (Burleson?) had just caught a bomb behind the defense but wasn't able to keep his feet, which would have tied the game at 24 in the 4th. They ended up missing a long field goal on that drive and go no points out of it
I do think the Saints win this one, but it will not be nearly the blowout I think a lot of people are expecting. I did, however, bet the over (59.5), so i'm rooting for lots of scoring, either way. I see 35-28 New Orleans.
