still no studies on whether being an authoritarian douchebag is caused by or causes brain damage. It's one of the two.

You know, I am a big proponent of science but food science is almost a joke.

/Eat eggs
//Or not, if you want to live
///Or do if you want to live
///Mmm, eggs.

Except so far this could be limited to rats, and it's not entirely clear what (if anything) the "brain scarring" does.

Pretty lame "science" reporting.

How dare you have a nuanced view of these things. It's FAT = BAD! month. Next month it'll be "CARBS = BAD!"

At least we haven't gone full Denmark yet.

Eating sugary and starchy food (like honey-glazed potato chips) cancels out the effect, so enjoy.

Stupid study is stupid. People these days are fat because of the sugar in our diets not the fat.

Here's (new window) the proof.

While long, about 90 minutes, this is maybe the best lecture, and lecturer, I've ever heard. Seriously. Dr. Lustig explains this stuff really clearly. At about 45 minutes though he gets into heavy bio-chemistry. So, if you just want the gist, watch the first 45 minutes and the last 10 or 15.

OK, reading TFA, the link is with high fat foods. Even so, fats aren't the present danger. Neither is cholesterol (also explained in the link above). It's all about sugar.

In a nutshell, don't drink your sugar (soda, fruit juice, etc.). Glucose (carbohydrates) is good. Fructose is bad. Only get fructose with the fiber (eating a fruit, not drinking its juice). HFCS and sugar are the same.

unfettered access to high-calorie, good-tasting food. That is not the traditional state for humans and are not well-suited such environments.

I'm not saying we can't do things to change that, or that reducing sugar intake isn't one of those things, I'm just saying it's a broader problem than "food X is bad".

It is actually that narrow. Really. The proof is here (new window). If you're curious, it's worth the hour and a half.

Your thinking is correct though regarding processed foods. Aside from the preservatives, sugar is also used to extend shelf life by expelling water. This is also explained in the link above.

gleaningtheboob: It is actually that narrow. Really.

You're misunderstanding. I'm not saying you're wrong about the biochemistry, I'm just saying that "sugar is widely available" is part of a larger change in human development -- in the past that sugar wasn't so easily available, and so as animals we are poorly adapted to the current situation.

My point is just that if you solve this problem by saying "don't day sugar" you're ignoring the larger problem of "now that we can easily eat whatever we want we will make choices that poorly suit our biology".

"don't eat sugar"

I'm not sure where that "day" bit came from.

profplump: "don't eat sugar"

I agree that there are larger issues. In my opinion, and in the opinion of others much more knowledgeable than myself, the most important issue is that if we really look at our basic nutritional needs and the amount of energy, land, water, etc. it takes to meet them, then we should all be vegetarians. The amount of meat and fish we eat, for numerous reasons, is ruining the world. And with the system in place, you have two classes of people: the overfed and the underfed.

That said, the immediate dangers of epidemic obesity can apparently be solved if we drastically reduce our sugar intake. Convincing people not to drink their sugar would probably be a lot easier than convincing them not to eat meat more than once a month.

If we really look at our basic nutritional needs, and the resources available on this planet, we should all develop the capacity for photosynthesis. Eating plants requires dedicating huge amounts of solar energy and land to their development, not the mention the energy, material, and human costs of agriculture and the related transport of food. If we all just grew leaves and stood in the sun for a few hours a day none of that would be necessary, and no one would go hungry.

/ And if we were really eco-minded we'd just develop internal fusion and forget this whole "outside energy" idea

These findings are interesting, but I'm concerned that they will be twisted into another excuse for why people just "can't" lose weight.

I came here to point out that the article mentioned high-fat diet and then mentioned obese people without any quoted link to the 2. I think this is because of the myths that have been spread about the causes of obesity.

The causes happen as much in the liver and the pancreas as in the brain. The manufactured and processed foods are confusing the hell out of the endocrine system, this is why we are fat. The solution to the obesity problem in this country will lie in reforming the FDA and unlinking it from the agriculture industry. We are fat because of government corruption. We are fat because of lobbyists convincing the stupid lawmakers to allow industry to poison our food with artificial chemicals which prevent us from feeling full and make us crave more. Everywhere the US has sent its junk food has seen a rise in obesity and diabetes.

Gee, no surprise, no caption. I'd be one of the few that would watch the entire thing and I get denied access, much like a wheelchair bound person access to a building.

Did you know the most commonly non-captioned shows are usually educational ones since they can easily demonstrate 'undue burden' on the budget to caption the show, even though there are government funds for it?
