Wow, the wallpaper sure has changed over the years.

Actually the Ripley(?) costume is really good.

I have no idea why somebody would wear a Beijing Opera costume to a Sci-Fi convention. It's a good quality costume, too, with the right make-up and everything.

And Slave Girl Leia wouldn't be around for 3 more years. How did they do it?

Now after looking at the other link, it looks like a time before anime kids. People are going as characters from books. People actually care about who Larry Niven is. Woah.

She looks like she'd probably gained about 50-100 pounds by the time she reached 30.

I heard about that from Mike Hodel's Hour 25 radio show. Apparently it was very convincing.

Seeing that article has reminded me that it's been 25 years since I attended my first sci-fi/comic convention. There used to be at least two big conventions a year and a couple of smaller ones, but I haven't seen or heard about any here in a long time.

And not a single 300 lb'er in the lot. Nice.

This brings back a lot of good memories, as 1980 was a big year for me. Graduated HS, and attended my first SF con (Atlanta Comics and Fantasy Fair). Where I discovered the wonders of Doctor Who.

Imagine the drama in teh bathroom, err dressing room, outside the main convention hall. So much last detail. So much anxiety. So much envy. Just like backstage at the International Drag Queen finals or a GOP debate.

I have been thinking about going to a sci-fi convention, there are a few around the NYC/Philly area.

This has cured me of that idea.

Thanks subby.

You know, I love a nice bush on a girl, but I cannot for the life of me understand how it was socially acceptable for Supergirl there to walk around with hair trailing up to her navel. Not that I mind personally, but I would think that sort of thing would be frowned upon in 1980.

Oh look, its another thread of Farkers expressing outrage at the thought of people enjoying something that doesn't revolve around beer, tits, or football.

How many of these are we up to now?

Even the fat people of 30 years ago were skinnier than the fat people of today. It's like obesity inflation.

And a photo of none other than Forey Ackerman at the '39 one, which could be regarded as THE very first known cosplay:

My brother moved to LA a bit before '80 and has been rooted in the SF scene there to this day. I'd be surprised if he were in any of those photos- he's not much for costumes.

Super-sized portions, not just HFCS. Back then, a large soda was 16 oz. A big burger was a McDouble. These are now the smalls.
