7.6 million people is still too many people. In cable, especially a channel like (No) Music Television, anything over 2 million viewers is unheard of on a regular basis. By comparison, anything under 7 million is liable to get you cancelled on network TV. It's going to take viewership falling off below 1 million viewers/episode & advertisers pulling out to get that waste of time-brains-money / freakshow / embarrassment / STD instructional film yanked off the air.

The only exception to the rule would be Syfy, where quality/popularity = cancellation. This makes me think, is Bonnie Hammer also responsible for the devolution of (No) MTV?

Pretty much the natural life cycle of an MTV show that's being honest about itself. That's how it works when you're consistently aiming towards the same youth demographic year after year. Youths outgrow your network and get replaced by new ones. And people are now outgrowing Jersey Shore.

I tried watching Jersey Shore once. I couldn't even make it past the opening credits.

/J-Wow does look good in a bikini though.

I too have only really seen the show through the prism of Beavis and Butthead, and when Jersey Shore is in short segments with idiot commentators who are still smarter than the mooks on the show, it is pretty entertaining. However I could never watch it for more than 10 minutes without throwing something at the tv without B & B.

To see what it was about, I managed to sit through about a minute and a half of that crap. Maybe longer, my memory has tried to block it out. All I know is that one of them smacked their head on the wall and some coontish looking girl said "I just hope he doesn't die" and I said "I hope he does" out loud despite being the only person in the house.

I just got the complete series just before Christmas and went through it voraciously.

I WAS Daria in high school, and to some extent, still am.

It's the one time MTV, and even most TV, decided to relate to someone like me.

My point? fark Jersey Shore. MTV is capable of so much greater.

GimpyNip: The biatching about MTV not playing music videos is hilariously dated. They haven't played videos since the early 90's and I don't think they even have TRL anymore. The reason why is the same reason VH1, BET, and FUSE all eventually stopped showing tons of music videos: Viewers only watch those stations for a few minutes then change the channel the second a video comes on they don't like. As if you people wouldn't be complaining about whatever videos they play anyway. Stop being a jackass and watch whatever video you want on YouTube.

THEN CHANGE THE NAME OF THE NETWORK. Stop calling it music television.

Eh, I'll white knight it, too, sort of. Can't claim to be a fan and don't like the people on the show, but the amount of patting ourselves on the back for disliking the show that happens every time one of these threads comes up is more pathetic than the show itself. The efforts to one-up one another and show that your disdain is even stronger than the next guy's is just silly.

SoCalSurfer wasn't very eloquent, but he has the right idea. The more people go out of their way to froth at the mouth about stuff like this, the more they sustain the attention shows like this get.

Change the channel/skip the link and move on.

No fewer than 2 of these people are getting their own spin-offs, so, no, MTV's 12-22 target demo is clearly not getting tired of this.
