8 shots of whiskey? That's an exageration. However I do people who are sick drive as bad as someone a little bit over the limit.
For most casual or non drinkers, 8 shots of whiskey and they're on the floor.

When I read "driving with a cold", I thought it meant "driving with a cold one". Yea, that was legal once - not too long ago. First time I got pulled over in Texas in 2000 I had an open beer. Not drunk? No problem.

Driving with a cold, no medication, is often like driving inebriated. Of course, so is driving tired, distracted, angry, or whatever.
No, it's not like you're driving shiatfaced hammered, but it's SIMILAR for many people as driving in that borderline zone of inebriation. You may not notice it, but just pay attention the next time you're in a car with someone who is pretty sick.
Frankly, if law enforcement is going to give DUIs to individuals who are over a numerical limit but not showing signs that their DRIVING is impaired (yes, a wholly different standard than field sobriety tests... and, yes, I'm giving law enforcement too much credit, because they don't have a problem arresting some people in profiling cases for DUI who are, by all standards of measurement, SOBER), it's time they start arresting the DANGEROUS drivers who are too distracted, too tired, or too ill to be behind a wheel. Because these people pose a risk that does not get put into a nice, easy statistical study.

This. I've been saying for years that the DUI system is simply a cash cow that the police can milk without any repercussions, because nobody wants to stand up for drunk drivers. My argument is that if you're going to fark over people that severely, you should be equally harsh on people using cell phones (measured as equal to a .08 BAL in studies), texting (morons anyway), dozing off (if you can't stay awake, you should be punished for driving), putting on makeup (??!), eating, or anything else distracting. Focusing only on DUI is purely a money grab that's easy for the cops, meanwhile people die every day from stupid people driving stupidly.

I can drink 8 shots over a 2 hour or so period and you wouldn't know I was drunk. I would be drunk and wouldn't dare get behind the wheel, but I would show very few noticeable symptoms.

Good, now can we get the legal limit back to .12? With reduced punishment for below .16? You know, the non-repeat offenders who don't deserve to have their whole life ruined because of one bad decision.
Or we could just pay them $90,000 to hang out in a small room and not work.

Also did they test these people right after they drunk them or waited about 30 mins for it to get in their blood stream?

Motor safety experts found that the driving skills of people who were sick were estimated to drop by about 50 percent when compared with those who were healthy.
50%? So you have half the driving skills as you did before. What total shiat.

Driving with Strep Throat, an Upper Respitory Infection AND Pink Eye, all at the same time is horrible, horrible, horrible, and I would have welcomed that accident to put me out of my misery.

Have you ever actually been drinking in a bar? Not a college bar with the loud music and the awful vodka drinks, but a proper smokey pub; quiet and crowded. I've seen old British guys tilt back nearly a bottle of Jameson's in the space of three hours and keep right up with the conversation without missing a beat. They weren't sober, but they could have walked a straight line or said the greek alphabet backwards if you'd asked.

I was 18 and driving with my 13 year old sister from Eugene to LA. A nice 14 hr drive. After stopping for food in Redding we both got violently ill. We had some large 32 oz cups with us and every once in a while I'd ask her to grab the wheel from the passenger seat and I'd puke into the cup at 70mph. It was awesome.

Having driven for 4 hours with a cold just before Christmas, I agree with the article, to some extent. Certainly, certain aspects of driving were harder, largely because I felt very tired. However, the experience lacked the loss in perception, loss of judgment, loss of dexterity, loss of reflexes (well, not AS bad, in my experience), etc. that comes with being drunk.
So, no, not as bad as being drunk.
