NBC vexes me. They routinely have the best shows on network TV (in the past several years, these include Parks and Rec, The Office, 30 Rock, Community, Life, Chuck, Parenthood and Friday Night Lights) and they SUCK as a network. It is seriously confusing.
Seriously, name me one other network which has a top 8 of quality shows over the past five years as good as NBC. And they can't get ratings.

NBC does the half hour sitcom pretty well, but the money hasn't been in that for about a decade.

The ratings they get aren't the issue. It's the ratings of the incredibly banal yet somehow popular shows like Big Bang Theory get. They don't say, "Community is doing OK -- not bad, not good, but making money". They say, "It's not beating BBT. We must have something equally mind-numbing to steal their viewers! Community isn't dumb enough! We must find something else!"
If you are always trying to succeed in the context of others' successes, you're always going to fail.

isn't the highest rated show on television typically a half hour sitcom? don't ratings determine ad revenue?

Because these are the Top rated programs on TV today:
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
NCIS
Two and a Half Men
NCIS: LA
Big Bang Theory
60 Minutes
Mentalist
Mike & Molly
2 Broke Girls
Can someone explain to me how the gal on Mike & Molly won the emmy last year? I mean, I'm not even saying she is a bad actress.... it's just how can you judge with how awful the writing is on that show.

Exactly. There can only be one #1 show for each time slot, yet the "big three" are constantly scrambling over each other to get to the top of everything all the time thinking that they'll be able to please every single viewer in America if they just got their idea right, the cast right, the day right, and the time slot right. But since we don't all like the same things, they should be happy that most of their garbage is getting any ratings at all.

The only shows I watch on NBC are the ones that get cancelled. NBC should just put all their good shows on USA, where ratings don't have to be as high.
I DVR every prime-time USA show. Even the worst shows are at least watchable, and the best ones are really good. I thought I'd be sick of Psych by now, but I still can't help but crack up every time I watch it. Life and Chuck both should have been on USA.

It's not like networks or regular cable because it does not rely at all on ad revenue and is entirely viewer driven. Their viewers pay up front. Since their movie licensing does not cost them much because they are backed by a studio, the majority of the subscription fees goes to the original programming, determining the budgets and levels of actors and writers they can get.
Also, since they back all the original programming from the development stage, they get a larger percentage of DVD revenues than other networks, which have to divvy up with individual distributors. That's why a channel with no ad revenue can afford to make series like Boardwalk and Game of Thrones, which cost anywhere from 5-10 million dollars an episode and how they can afford to develop a pilot with guys like Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte.

They always said Community would be back "at some point" the question is whether it will be renewed for a 4th season or if they are just going to finish airing season 3.
And stop saying shows like Whitney are going ot save your network. It sucks and everyone knows it.
