I'm from a Dutch background, and while I don't know the language that well, I know that a lot of the names have rather humble meanings (my family's name means "outside yard" or "outside dock", something like that). "Van der Sloot" translates to "of the ditch". "Joran" is related to the name "George", which means "farmer" or "earth worker". So if you boil it down, the guy's name basically pegs him as a digger of ditches, which is what he ought to be doing on a chain gang... until someone gives him the shiv.
