She seemed very controlled, albeit disappointed.

I'm certain his mother was just indicating that her sons educational needs would be better met at a different institution of higher learning. They don't mention his planned area of study but I'm sure she just feels LSU has a better program.

waaaah...my kid gets a free ride through college I probably wouldn't be able to afford otherwise but I'm gonna whine about it because I'm a fan of a rival school...waaaah.

Shut your mouth woman. Just remember your little whining session when/if your kid buys you a house (provided he goes on to the NFL of course, or gets those 'bonuses' the players get at 'Bama)

My sister was a good D-1 athlete, she didn't go to a school I root for (and went to), she went to a rival one. But damn if I didn't switch my allegiance every time they played. Why? Because she's my sister, that's why. I'm sure mom will get over it. If she doesn't, she's a moran.

I know there's lots of shiat on TV these days, and I'm sure its hard to come up with 24 hours of programming for however many ESPN channels there are now. But seriously...a live broadcast for a high school player announcing what school he's going to attend play for? Wow.

Well, he is ranked as the 7th-best player in the country, and the impassioned fans of college football like to know as soon as possible what's happening with their rosters -- which change yearly, remember, as kids come and go. Can't exactly sign a college-kid to anything more than a 4-year deal.

MaxSupernova: supposedly his girlfriend behind him just got a track scholarship to alabama the week before

Bama did the old "give a scholly to the girlfriend" trick. Mama would also like to go to all of his games. But mama also knows that a kid from that part of Louisiana who does well at LSU can have a good job when his playing days are over even if he doesn't make it into the NFL. He would have a degree, or two, be educated and everyone will know his name. If he goes to Bama, he will never get that opportunity. He won't be a hero in his hometown. That can really matter to a mother.

Some of these kids also get so high on themselves that they believe that they are "too good for 'round here." They think that leaving their hometowns is necessary to become a success. But in college sports, LSU is a national and international destination, it is the big time. It's kind of like a kid growing up in Manhattan, wanting to be a stage actor, and thinking he's too good for Broadway, because it's local, so he leaves for Atlanta. Sportswise, and logically, there is no compelling reason for any Louisiana kid recruited by LSU to go anywhere else. If it was between LSU and Stanford or Harvard and academics is an issue, I can understand. But not Alabama.

College football continues to be the runaway creepiest pastime in all of history.

- Your child is committing to a major power program on live TV and you bus-toss him because your ig'nant ass prefers the Tigers? It's the kid's decision, for better or worse, support him. CREEPY.

- Bill O' Brian is named head coach at Penn State. Many alumni and former players are OUTRAGED, to the point of claiming to disavow all support of PSU. Mind you, they were not willing to abandon PSU AFTER A COACH WAS ACCUSED OF RAPING LITTLE BOYS...but hire someone who is not "from the family"? OUTRAGE. CREEPY.

I don't get the attraction to this sport.

Unless I see the occupation of a parent as Lawyer or Oil Company Executive or Politician, it's a safe bet no one can afford to send their child to a huge college football school. Jebus, Even UW-Madison is somewhere around 36k a year.

But keep playing that idiot card. I'm sure it will pay off for you someday.

I went to a "huge college football school." Top-10 football rankings two years I was there, a Bowl victory over a huge program, and a handful of NFL stars/first- and second-round draft picks were on our team. We also won national championships in several other sports, including big ones like Men's Basketball. No scholarships or assistance for me, tuition and books totaled about $10k/year I think. But I don't know exactly because my Federal Government-employed father paid the bills.

In fact, I just went to my college's website: tuition there, at the flagship campus of the state's university program, is still under $9k a year for in-state residents.

So, you know, you can call me the idiot, or you can deal with facts.

The fact is his value of 36k a year for UW-Madison is pretty close to reality. Tuition for Madison instate are around 5k a semester (less for Wisconsin residence, slightly more for Minnesota residents so about 5k), so 10k a year instate, more than twice that out of state, so 20k a year. Cost of living in Madison is another 10k between housing and food. (6k for housing 3k for food). So already we are double your stated value of 10k a year, and that is for instate tuition, we are at 30k a year for someone that is out of state.

To put it in perspective the smaller state schools in Wisconsin cost about 10k-15k a year (LaCrosse, Platteville, Steven's Point, etc) for tuition and living.

You profile says you are from California so lets grab a school out in California that could potential fit your bill UCLA. UCLA has a really nice table of everything. Cost of living: Off campus apartments 28.5k a year for instate residents hmm that is closer to his 36k estimate. How about out of state? 51k a year. Well now guess we can toss out those schools.

Now lets start going to other schools around the country. Lets say Oregon, Alabama, West Virginia, and Florida.
-Oregon
Instate: 7-8k a year, tuition.
Out of sate: 24k a year.
Oregon's cost of living is between Madison and UCLA's so it comes out to about 15k a year for them, so you are still looking low to mid 20k's a year at best for instate.

-Alabama also does cost of living estimates:
Instate: 22k a year (that is tuition and cost of living)
Out of state: 34k a year (again tuition and cost of living)

-West Virginia again cost of living so these are tuition and cost of living
Place is farking cheap
Instate: 16k a year
Out of State: 28k a year

-Florida again cost of living
Instate: 20k
Out of state: 27k

In short 36k is slightly high for a lot of Major Schools but not unusual for a large portion of their students. For example UW-Madison has close to 40% of their students coming from out of state which is extremely high (it is pulled up by Minnesota, but it is well above the majority of major schools that have similar deals by a good 10-20%).

So now that the facts are in front of you I am going to call you an idiot.

Idiot.

Except you're not playing fair. You're assuming that every college kid is going to need to move somewhere, to pay rent, to eat on campus, stuff like that. And you're right, that if you live on campus and get the meal plan and buy a car and get new books etc. then going to college will cost you tens of thousands of dollars a year.

But that was never the argument I made. One guy saw a black family and derped, "well good thing he's getting a scholarship," but the actual costs of college for most students, especially those from working-class families who know they don't have the money to spend, are much lower. That kid was from New Orleans, he could have gone to LSU for under SEVEN THOUSAND dollars a year (a 15-credit-hour semester is just over $3100), plus books, plus a bus pass (not really, it's 80 miles, but you get my point).

My total cost of college was nowhere near $36k/year, it was barely $36k TOTAL because I didn't live in a dorm or eat my meals in the campus cafeteria. And that's the way most people do it.

You two that are arguing with me on the assumption that all college students pay for everything they could possibly pay for. Well, in my experience, a huge portion of college kids is commuting from home, living with Mom and Dad, working part-time, etc. And those are the working-class kids that I'm talking about. And that's why it's idiotic to assume that this kid's family couldn't afford it -- an undergrad degree is only a $100k proposition if that's the choice you make.

Idiots.

There's this six year old in Bunkie, Louisiana who is tearing it up in pee wee league. We've got our eyes on him. The key is diet and exercise and some growth hormones. We'll have this kid ready for LSU when he's 18.
