First off, Pompeii hasn't been fully excavated. It is quite possible their garbage dumping site hasn't been located yet. Second off, if these are the same tombs I've seen then yea, you can see the graffiti on some of them. However, I wouldn't necessarily assume the trash found in these tombs implied Pompeiians were pigs, Romans believed in sharing their meals with their dead. Could explain why animal bones and broken pottery were found. Anyway, just my two cents.

I just a documentary on Pompeii. It might have been one of the Sex in the Ancient World series. One of the main thrusts (Hee!) was that Pompeii wasn't as sex crazed as we thought. Sure, there were brothels everywhere, but that was common for back then. They were also starting to return to the old Roman morals.

They showed the wall of gym/bathhouse where patrons would store their clothing in little cubicles. Above the cubicles were numbers, but then they discovered that the numbers were painted over sexual pictures. Each cubicle was a different sex position, and the guy narrating the show didn't know if it meant that prostitution also happened at the baths, or if it was just a clever way to get the customers to remember where their clothes were.

I have been trying to remember this from college for ages! I remember the professor pointing out how clever it was, because Catullus berates his critics for confusing the poem's speaker with the poet, while simultaneously threatening them as the speaker.

Personally, I think Herculaneum is a much better site to see than Pompeii. If you're in the L.A area and want something cheap to do, go visit the Getty Villa. They are the only antiquity museum in the US and you can see artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
