Most impressive. I'm more impressed by the 6-0 score 25 minutes in. Calgary's D was a shambles. Hope they saved some gas in the tank for Saturday.

I thought they were saying 'we want van', but eh.

That wasn't so much a display of the Bruins being amazing as it was of the Flames playing some of the absolute worst defense I think I've ever seen in a pro game. I'm guessing most AHL teams could have walked in and ripped them up that evening.

/go B's

I'm afraid of the Bruins and I'm a fan of the best hockey team ever!

I'm surprised Boston didn't cough up that lead at last possible moment.

My night last night:

"Wow, that was a rough day at work, and I finally got the cranky baby down. Finally a few minutes to throw on the game and see how the Flames are dOHMYGOD"

Butler was -7 last night. Poor sap.

Heckling the other team is part of sports. Get over it.

And these are professionals. This isn't big bad rich high school beating up on poor underpopulated rural high school, where gross disparities in levels of talent make blowouts inevitable. These are tems of elite athletes of roughly equal skill, with one just having a bad day. It's just as likely that, on another day, the Bruins would be down 9-0, and would be on the receiving end of a chant like that, and it would be just as appropriate then.

2012-01-06 12:16:20 PM
There's something very satisfying about scoring 10 in hockey. As a big college hockey fan, 10 goals is not too unusual and the fans always chant for 1 more. Personally, I've always been on the side that encourages running up the score in pro sports. You're freaking professionals. And if you say it's pointless to run up the score, technically it's not. Pretty much every sport has tie-breakers for playoffs and draft spots that involve points/goals scored. Does it come up often? No, but you never know. This could be the year a team misses the playoffs because they didn't score as many goals as the other team tied with them in the standings. And if it's only by a couple goals and you decided 6-0 at the end of the first period in a game was enough, you're going to be pretty pissed.

2012-01-06 12:17:19 PM
The only downer about last night's game for me was that Marchand was out with the flu, and in a goofy game like that he easily chips in a few assists for my fantasy team.

Oh, and Iginla is a better man than I for not immediately heading upstairs and demanding a trade after his first shift of the second period, let alone a couple years ago.

2012-01-06 12:22:04 PM
As a casual Flames fan in Boston I have to say that last night was rough.

2012-01-06 12:28:28 PM
Flames fan here.

I just received this from my friend.

That's something special right there.... notables are of course are the record tying -7 by Butler, but also look at Backlund and his -5 while only playing 15 somewhat sheltered minutes, and our "top pairing" being a combined -12. Also our "top line" with a combined 4 shots in the game.

I watched the entire game, it was hilarious, best game I've seen all year.

Trade everyone, fire everyone (including Harvey the Hound and the guy who plays the organ).

The backup goalie has shutouts in 3 of his last 4

The Canucks must be shaking in their jockstraps right about now.

Two things:

1. As a Flames fan, I say "no worries, Boston. Chant all you want". Seriously, I want our boys to feel the full humiliation of that loss. If you're going to go out and play like that, you're going to get every goddamn thing that comes with it.

And as a fan, if that game were reversed and being played in Calgary, you'd bet your ass I'd be doing the same thing.

2. For as unbelievably scary awesome as the Bruins are playing, does anyone really think they can keep this pace all season? I mean good on them if they do, but injuries or just plain bad luck can catch up.

But hey, you just keep going.

/have always had a soft spot for the Bruins
//I'll never thank you enough for beating those cocksucking Canucks at home in Game 7. That was truly a beautiful thing you did
///thanks again

The most telling (non) stat for me is that only 2 Bruins are in the top 40 in points, yet there are 11 in the top 30 for +/-. Total team effort, every night. They're playing all-world level hockey right now.

I'm a huge B's fan, so my painfully obvious pants-tent has been almost impossible to hide for the last two months. I keep waiting for the inevitable stroke of bad luck, but so far so good...knock on wood.

Well, it's hard to expect a team to have both of their goalies maintain a 94% save percentage and sub 2.00 GAA for the whole year (as both Thomas and Rask have now).

T.J. Brodie played 25 minutes and was the only Flames player to escape without a 0 in their plus/minus column for last night.

Somehow, nobody took exception.

Boston's goal differential is +69... more than the next two teams combined. Since starting 3-7-0, they've accumulated 87% of the total possible points in the 27 games since. They're the only team in the league that hasn't allowed a SHG this season. This team is scary good, and what's more, all four lines are contributing.

Regardless of who you pull for, this is a team to watch right now. It will be a long time before you see another team this good.

Give him $16M/4yrs - RFA, SchmRFA.

That's actually really impressive. Then again, maybe he played all his minutes against players who aren't Bergeron, Seguin, Horton, Lucic, Krejci, or Pouliot (and that's just the forwards who were +3 on the night, plus "one of the greatest disappointments in talent in NHL history" thrown in for good measure).

/I had to type way more names than I thought I would to cover all the Bruins' 2- & 3-point scorers...

Good catch. I follow all conferences and I even check out D-3 from time to time. (Plenty of 10-spots in D-3.) But I'm an RIT fan first, so that obviously involves a lot of AHA watching. I get to watch RIT take on AIC a couple times a year. If we have less than 6 goals, I'm pretty disappointed. But you're right, 10 is pretty uncommon in the big 4. AHA has been improving enough where it's even becoming rare there. I mean, Wisconsin only put up 8 on us in the Frozen Four a couple years ago.

Also, what's a Catamount Cup and when should I expect its arrival?

Pretty happy I had WJC gold medal game tix last night, so that I could avoid this shiatshow. My buddy and I were referring to the team as the Calgary Stat-padders last night prior to the game. They surpassed even our wildest expectations.

The Bruins sure do look good these days, though.

My alma mater (Umass-Lowell) hasn't made the NCAA tournament since 1996 so you guys got that going for ya!

In regards to the Catamount Cup and taking into account that UVM being a dirty hippie school, I would expect to receive a block of cheddar cheese, incense, and some all natural goat milk soap all nestled within a crock pot in the next week or so after they scrounge up all the items from their commune.

Rangers are in the same boat. 29th, 55th, 56th are our top 3 scorers vs. the NHL. team effort every night.

Boston and Rangers are both teams full of home-grown, young talent, and both have all-world goaltenders.

Throw Philly into the mix, and the I-95 corridor is going to be bloodier than the Ho Chi Men trail for the next several years.

My living room will be just as bad. My wife is a hardcore Rangers fan. They find ways to win. If they meet in the playoffs, I'll be going to the bar to watch...I would fear for my personal safety otherwise. Hank needs to prove himself in the playoffs, and I think this is the year he will do it. I don't want to taint his chances though...
