I think my brother was 15 in the 8th grade, mostly because he had to start school late due to a heart operation he had when he was 5 or 6. Kind of set you back. He'll be 50 next year.

Probably a combination of repeating a grade plus having a birthday past the enrollment cutoff date.

Locally you have to be 5-years old before September 30th in order to enroll in kindergarten. Otherwise, you wait until the following September to start.

Yea I remember a 15 year old... in 7th or 8th, can't remember. Pretty sure he was homeless, too. I only found out how old he was when I found his driver's license in a desk one day (didn't check to see what the address said).

It's double tough on these kids. Not only are they homeless, but they're often ridiculed for being older than the other students in their grade.

We tried to get the parents of the 8-year old boy to go to the Eugene Mission, but when they found out that they would be separated, they refused. I can't say that I blame them, though. They didn't have much in this world, except each other. Nowadays, there's housing for homeless families that allows them to stay together, back then such a thing wasn't available.

I graduated from high school when I was 17.

When I was in 8th grade we did have a kid that was 17 in our P.E. class but he was retarded and the coaches always had to slap him with a ruler to keep him from beating off on the toilet while we were in the locker room.

The kid in my school was massive, well over 200 pounds. No one was going to point out to this kid he didn't have a home and live to tell about it. As I recall, he hung around with some other... toughs.

Not all pellet guns have the safety orange tip. Some kids even like to paint over the ones that do. Also, it wasn't just having one that got the kid killed, it was having one and refusing to put it down when a bunch of cops had guns pointed at him. If you're that dumb, I don't think the world is a whole lot worse off without you.

I (also a Texan) was 15 in eight grade, thanks to having to repeat the first grade (long story). I also graduated cum laude with a BSEE degree.

I'd say 15 in eigth grade doesn't automatically make you a 'tard, but (if the police account is accurate), brandishing a pistol while cops are pointing guns at you does move a little more into 'tard territory.
