They had to get something out there to counter Santorum getting booed.

During his opening remarks at Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, President Obama got laughs when he told students that they inspire him.

"I want you to know you're the reason that I ran for this office in the first place. You remind me what we are still fighting for," Obama said to tepid cheers.

"You inspire me," Obama said to an audience that laughed at him.

He was obviously responding to something said by an individual, and the crowd seemed warm to him. God this crap is so old, how can anyone take this kind of website seriously when even something as banal as a HS speech gets such an obvious spin draped over it. They are just giving all the right-wing tards that read this crap their fix.

RCP: "Obama gave a speech at a High School and he looked like an idiot! The high schoolers totally laughed him off the stage and he had to run back to Africa!"

Republican: "Ahhhh yeah, that's the stuff. Give me more."

Is this conservative "humor", which derives from a series of in-jokes that I'm just supposed to get? Otherwise, it looks like a punchline with no setup (or, if you prefer, a setup with no punchline).

It's not even "A man walks into a bar." More like: "A man walks. Get it?! HAHAHAHAHAHAH(stupid libs)AHAHAHAHAHAHAH"

This is why TPM stories (or the like) are usually a bit longer than three paragraphs sentences. Unless it's breaking news THAT CAN STAND ON ITS OWN ("The president's secret service detail has been attacked by super-intelligent crawfish. The situation is said to be delicious and Old Bay-covered.") - and is usually rounded out by a later update (or several) - maybe some context, or, you know, describing the scene, Obama's remarks beforehand, the town the school is in (is it filled with derp, or is it a "purple" town in a "purple" state, is Nancy Pelosi's picture hanging on every wall)...

Something other than "The preznit is near a joke!"

You mean the part where the person in the audience was saying his thing? Which caused the president to look over, as did presumably the others, and laugh?

Or is your theory that since you didn't hear the person in the audience, it didn't happen, and therefore everyone hates Obama forever and Jesus is automatic president?

Or one would have expected Obama's line in the speech to be an applause line that fell completely flat.

It would be informative, if someone did make a comment in the audience, to know what it was, such as "you so full of shiat!" or "you rawk Obama!". Or given or public school system, it might have been someone saying, "What does inspire mean?".

I was a prick when I was a teenager. I was rude and disrespectful to authority. I don't think, though, that even the most disrespectful pricks I knew would have laughed at the president like this. Times they are a changing, I guess. I'm not even that old (30), and this makes me feel a bit old. #kidsthesedays

Obama's prepared remarks from a quick google search:

Finally, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. One of my resolutions is to make sure I get out of Washington enough and spend more time with people like you. Because folks here in Ohio and across the country - you're the reason why I ran for this office in the first place. And on days like today, you remind me what we're still fighting for. An America where hard work and responsibility pays off. An America where anyone who puts in the effort and plays by the rules can get ahead.

It was an improvised line, not said with the oomph of an applause line, in the middle of a paragraph. Also, the line right before that one got applause.

Whatever, I can't believe I cared enough to type this out.

Sure. At the very least, though, you can listen to the president of the united states without laughing in his face. I think that's the least we can ask of the youth of today. Apparently, though, it's too much.

There's someone in the comments that said, I shiat you not, they might become another "greatest generation". What's great about this is how the same person will probably deride the youth of America as being ignorant assholes when a majority of them help re-elect Obama come fall.

It proves that Obama is a joke and Republicans should run the White House.

"You inspire me. *pause; shocked expression* --Okay! You do?"

I'm trying to figure out what heckling could have fit in there. Maybe, "I inspire me"?

If it were "Yeah, I inspire you!" then the appropriate response should have been in the affirmative, not a question. "I inspire me" doesn't really work either, though. Maybe, "I do all the inspiring around here"? But that's too long and clumsy...

This is tricky.

"I inspire everyone!"

2012-01-06 01:25:01 PM
It should be clear to anyone watching the video that the laughter was prompted by an off camera remark after Obama said "you inspire me." I'm going to go ahead and assume the comment was something akin to "you had me at hello."

2012-01-06 01:28:07 PM
Zzzz. What's next, a three-line article about Obama hitting a doughnut shop and getting a communist-bourgeois latté?

I've missed the watery-diarrhea-like flood of extraordinarily trivial butthurt election year blog posts. Remember when Michelle Obama ate lobster, guys?

When he was pseudo-pointing to the crowd and he said, "You inspire me" one of the students he was looking at at the time might have said, "Me?! I inspire you?" The kids laughed. Obama pointed to the person that said that, and said "You do!"

Or something like that. Now we've really wasted too much time on this nonsense.
