Well that seems like a fair and unbiased recounting of the facts. I'm completely convinced.

Sybarite: Well that seems like a fair and unbiased recounting of the facts. I'm completely convinced.

I went and read the news stories related to Hamline and Emmer. It boils down to this:

Emmer: Hamline gave me a guarantee that they were going to hire me, but the liberal professors forced them to break that promise. Now, hire me.

Hamline College: We've never given you a guarantee that we were going to hire you.

Of course, Emmer's the one who's going to all the news outlets, so his views gets heard the most.

Is there some kind of competition among the admins to see who can greenlight the worst political blog?

bradzinn.net

Seriously? We're down to right-wing magicians now?

I like the oxymoronic name of the blog. The moronic contents are pretty funny too.

I didn't get past the first line, which indicated that this is Hamline University. I don't know a damn thing about Hamline University, but it sounds like a private institution to me.

I'm pretty sure my lefty ass has no chance of being hired at Liberty University, and I'm just fine with that.

FTFA: The iconic conservative author Norman Podhoretz in National Review once noted that the "closed-mindedness" in Dr. Bloom's title refers to that paradoxical mindset displayed in political correctness - namely, "the narrow and intolerant dogmatism that dismisses any attempt ... to provide a rational basis for moral judgments."

I would remind everyone that this is the same Norman Podhoretz who was a major advocate of preemptive war with Iraq and Iran (anyone who disagrees is a terrorist), is a right-wing Trotskyite (as described by Pat Buchanan) and will only agree to be interviewed (new window) if there is no one else there to challenge him.

You are correct. Hamline University is a private institution.

Try getting hired as a Pagan or a Jew at a Christian seminary or devotional university. Doesn't matter what subject you teach--if you aren't an evangelical Christian you won't get hired. They are very explicit about this. (new window) Of course, the "intellectual conservative" doesn't point out this inconvenient fact or many others like it.

Why would you hire a Republican to teach business law? How many days does it take to say "Deregulate everything"?

This is not altogether unusual in the broader sense....faculty or officials often raise concerns about appointments they think are politically damaging or conflicting to an academic mission in the long run (new window), sometimes embarrassingly so.

Academic Lynching

So in other words:

At some point in his academic life his grades sucked.

Insisting upon getting hired at the college of his choice; when they didn't comply with his demands of a teaching post... he starts crying.

With conservatives it's always someone else's fault.

Liberal bias on campus, no less than in mainstream media, is an open, shameful little secret.

That's not how secrets work!

Just the title alone, "Intellectual Conservative," has to be one of the funniest things I've seen since I read of Buckley's death.

So, perhaps Subby would like some kind of, I don't know, government regulation, they could cite to force a university to hire someone?

Yeah... I'd want to see the 'almost-governor's CV.

Somehow, I don't see it as measuring up at all well against any established legal scholar.

2012-01-06 11:35:56 AM
We don't really need conservatives infecting people with their hate ideology. KKK Grand Wizards don't get college posts either.

2012-01-06 11:40:57 AM
You mean some professors might not want their academic institution used for political grandstanding - that they might have wanted fellow instructors to have actual qualifications besides having lost an election? The hell you say!

/I'm sure this politician would have faithfully followed the approved curriculum and not have tried to inject his own political biases.

This story was much better when it was an episode of The Good Wife.

2012-01-06 11:45:11 AM
Even were this story reputable and accurate, which it obviously isn't, the fact remains that Republicans keep acting like maybe all political viewpoints deserve equal respect. They don't. You can't be an anti-science, racist, hatemongering jackhole (i.e., Republican) and expect to be treated like an adult. I'm sure there are plenty of Stormfront members out there that get turned down for jobs based on their political beliefs too.

2012-01-06 11:45:41 AM
Private institutions may hire whom they please. Apparently Hamline decided that it did not like Tom Emmer.
The fact that Emmer is running crying to the right-wing bloggers of Minnesota suggests that Hamline made a good decision by not allowing this self-important rat-fink into its faculty.

There's your problem. You need to switch to blotter acid. The blog will make much more sense once it starts pulsing and the drooling spiders consume your feet in an endless cycle.

But that's for religion. This is regarding political views, which unlike religious beliefs, are actually an individual's CHOICE.

/at least that's the only logical way to defend such discrimination I can think of.

FTA: Emmer and others in his corner swiftly diagnosed the problem

Oh yeah, that's convincing.

Emmer is a loon. He's an intellectual lightweight with a temper.

The fact that he was able to even get close to the governorship is a sign of just how bad our political system has gotten.

Koalaesq: This story was much better when it was an episode of The Good Wife.

Hey, you're right. Plus that gave them the excuse to bring Michael J. Fox back and his role on that show is hilarious.

To be fair, religious institutions whose primary mission is proselytization generally require of their employees adherence to their religion. It's why Lutherans tend to have a hard time getting jobs as Mormon missionaries and why mosques usually don't hire Catholics as imams.

They do it for reasons similar to why airlines try not to hire flat-earthers as pilots and why hospitals aren't keen to employ blind heart surgeons.

/except for the part that pilots and heart surgeons work in industries other than declaring Bronze Age fairy tales to be fact

Well, they're probably taken more seriously by academics than Liberty or Regent, anyway....
