Holy crap. I didn't believe it, but it's true. Even the sports commentators missed it.

Tell me this isn't the end of the story.

Nevermind. Found the story on ESPN. No protest filed yet, but there prolly will be one filed soon.

There's a Pitino/pulling out joke in there, but I haven't had my coffee yet.

this has happened before. don't expect the protest to be successful.

The results will stand since results are never overturned due to betting concerns. The lesson as always, is if you can get away with it, cheat.

I imagine the result stands. Fifth down anyone?

Hope that officiating crew enjoys watching the rest of the season on TV.

Maybe the Saturday morning 6 year old league needs a ref or two.....

I love that absolutely nobody noticed it while it was happening.

It is amazing how things like this (or in baseball, players walking after 3-balls or getting 4 strikes or the fifth-down in football) always seem to happen one or two times a year.

I have a friend who is a AAA Umpire, he has lost the count a few times in the 12 years he has been doing it and has given the 4th strike once when the scoreboard operator was asleep at the switch.

I don't know about college basketball but AAA umps have a pretty brutal schedule and sometimes fatigue can set in.

ULL could have had a dozen guys on the court - all but one were just kinda standing there anyway.

Official explanation: I was told there would be no math.

Nothing will happen. If the refs were too clueless to catch it, then it will stand. Every sport encourages cheating as long as you don't get caught (within the game). They cheated and were not caught.

As someone who was at the game, I didn't realize it until I was driving home.
Doesn't matter, tho. WKU coach has driven the 9th all-time winningest college basketball program into the ground.

Meh

Both Subby and Deadspin misspelled "Lafayette".

/ There is no University of Louisiana
// Get it right, swamp-tards!

That was the point. By spreading out the defense unnaturally they allowed the guy with the ball to get better ISO.

Lafayette is a college in Pennsylvania. I know you're butthurt about it, but it's the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.

Actually the school is University of Louisiana Lafayette, known as Lousiana's Ragin Cajuns.

The School was at one time the University of Southwestern Louisiana. The state board changed the name to University of Louisiana (84 or so I think), but the folks at LSU were so butthurt, they put pressure on the state govt to change it back to USL.. A few years later the ULL compromise was hammered out.

Looks like you don't have to worry about it. any longer. They fired their coach like 15 minutes ago.

One of our alumni was a long time college and NBA referee (he's in his late 80's now, so he ref'd long ago). I found a newspaper article on his retirement in which the reporter asked him what he planned to do in his retirement. He said, "Sleep."

The people in the crowd noticed and were yelling at the refs and even showing six fingers. I believe the refs might be enjoying some vacation time soon.

This. My sister has lived in Lafayette all her life and that's the explanation she gave me.

Yeah... it's odd. They just use "Louisiana" on their uniforms and logos though, no mention of the city. In any case, they're a Sun Belt school, and nobody cares about the Sun Belt.

Ya know, power plays in basketball would make it a bit more interesting. Better than free throws, IMO.

This.

And that's why nobody noticed. If they had even come close to manning up on D, even briefly, it would have been pretty obvious.

Don't fret! WKU will get a new coach and the 'Toppers will do what they do best, which is to play well enough every now and then to make an occasional NCAA tournament cameo appearance and be gone by the 2nd round.

In fairness, that was a nine-point game where the extra player was on the court for the final seconds.

This one had the game-winner with the extra guy on the floor.

/guess you should've manned up, then you'd notice, WKU

Nope. It ended as a nine-point game in OT, but the 6th man happened at the end of regulation. FTA: "The sixth-man incident occurred after Georgetown called a timeout to set up its defense with 12 seconds left in regulation and the score tied at 72-72."

Ah, ok. So they didn't score, then? Or did both teams score?

/not really significant enough to me to look it up
