Considering one gallon of gas can push two tons thirty miles, I would say not much.

"All of the energy concentrated in one gallon of gasoline is enough to charge an iPhone once a day for almost 20 years."

Don't you hate it when people ask questions they already know the answer to? I sure do.

"All of the energy concentrated in one gallon of gasoline is enough to charge an iPhone once a day for almost 20 years."

Sounds like a facetious statement to me. Sure, it might be true in some cases but the electrical grid is way different because electricity has to be sent over varying distances and each portion of the grid has different efficiency.

Wow, the internet is not very helpful here...

Let's assume the iPhone has a 2000ish mAh battery (like most phones). It may be more but I could not find a single reference to it's actual capacity.

That works out to be roughly 0.0024 kilowatts of storage.
Gasoline has an energy density of 8.76 kilowatts per liter.

So you'd need 1/3650th of a liter of gasoline to fully charge one 2000 mAh battery. Now, that's at a 100% conversion rate, which you'd never EVER get. But even at a retardedly low efficiency rate, your answer still comes out to be VERY little gasoline.

/There has been some math.

Kilowatt whats? Hours, Seconds, Days? A watt is an instantaneous measure of power. The world is so much easier in Joules.

Neat! You could do the same with 1.6 micrograms of uranium.

Ah, sorry. Not sure how that got cut off. It's all in kilowatt hours.

Simply converting "energy contained within" Joules into electricity works for everything!!

For example I had a steak last night. It was a 12oz NY steak and the menu said it had 750 calories (kCal) That converts to 3.1MJ, which would fill an iPhone (let's say 1400mah, 3.7v = 5.18wh = 19kJ) 163 times. Which if you charge it every other day or so is about one year's worth of charging.

Kittens at birth weigh about 4 oz. and probably have similar energy content as a steak. Therefore every year you use your iPhone, you kill 3 kittens. For some people depending on what you use your phone for this number may be higher.

Yes, and due to e=mc^2, there's enough energy in a penny to power the world forever!

I am shocked that exxonmobile came to the conclusion that fossil fuels will be the easiest and cheapest energy.

I wonder what meat the pork industry thinks is healthiest?

2000 mAh may be a tad high... 1500-1850mAh is probably a more suitable number. The iPhone 4 has around... 1420 mAh if iFixit's teardown is to be believed. Not sure about the 4S.

Anywho, I'd rather they ask "How many turns of a wind turbine does it take to charge an iPhone?" Yeah yeah, I know, probably not good for their business model.

/nit picking... continue on.

Well then there are a lot of bores in this thread, so GTFO and go watch some people run into each other at full sprints, or something.

But you keep responding back. So I'm guessing you have some sort of superiority complex that compels you to try and get in the last word.

So, I can just soak my phone in gas and light it to charge it. Sweet. That'll take far less time then plugging it in.
