Maybe it's just me, but doesn't it ruin the point of giving us a first look at Star Trek: TNG in high definition if the preview video is in standard def?

We at least get to see the remastering.

Do we *really* need to see a remastered version of that POS episode "Code of Honor"?

Really?

So, did the remastering job clean up effects like the Farpoint alien that much, or is that new CGI?

From what I understand, new CGI.

Just got done watching TNG though on Netflix with my 4-yr old. She is now very excited about space and into math/science. She is also into robots and talks about Data a lot. And..... She likes Worf because "he's cute!"

This isn't the Lucasverse we're dealing with here; it won't be all-new CGI. However Deanna's "GreaT joy, and graT-i-Tude" line will have even sharper "T" sounds.

I figured they'd do the same thing to TNG that they did for the TOS upgrade, and redo a lot of the CGI.

Except it's not correct.

They saved pretty much all the FX elements from the show, which was shot on film using models. In Encounter At Farpoint's case, the elements were shot at Industrial Light & Magic in VistaVision. All they are doing is scanning those elements in HD and recompositing them digitally. Certain elements, like phasers & photon torpedoes and other animation was done on the primitive computers of the time. That CG will be redone at HD resolution.

For TOS, the FX had to be redone in CG because the original elements weren't kept. Plus due to the primitive compositing at the time, huge amounts of grain and dirt had built up on the FX shots, making them look fairly noisy. You can see them with the "angle" feature on the Blu-ray.

The Farpoint alien was a puppet, which now in HD you can see was translucent.

that would be nice, I love watching the upgraded TOS every week, TNG would be that much better but they probably wouldn't show it on broadcast tv like TOS so I'd be out of luck cuz I ain't paying for it.

The HD treatment must still be light years better than the Lucas treatment. Hopefully just cleanups and a slight enhancement here or there.

No stupid additional unnecessary scenes and changing plot lines (Han shot first).

No Jar Jar.

Probably a win just for that already!

Bye.

No, but they are going to CGI a beard onto Riker for the first season so that people will think the writing's better. Link (new window)

Fix old, no new?

That said, I'd sacrifice my left nut to see a remastered HD version of Bablyon 5 with updated CGI.

And also, the main reason for the re-compositing is that the original filmed elements were composited on video, not film.

As I understand it, they have no choice but to remaster the effects, but they don't plan on replacing the effects - just making them look better. The show was shot on film stock, but all of the original effects were done after the footage was transferred to standard def video tape for editing, so in order to make the show high-def they have to go back to the original film stock, re-edit the footage to recreate the original episode and put the new remastered effects back in.

This article from September already discussed it. According to that article they plan on simply remastering the previous effects, and only replacing a few pieces of effects footage that have apparently gone missing.

I'm most curious to see how they handle things like the neural parasites from the season 1 episode Conspiracy, which were originally choppy animation

Did they remove the suck from the first two seasons?

I Like Bread: And it's still in 4:3. What the crap?

The original series was obviously edited to 4:3 for TV, since almost no one was doing 16:9 for TV at the time.

The series was, however, shot on film stock (though, strangely, edited on video for the first season or so), so it should end up looking pretty keen.

Nah, the acting isn't bad, it's just overly dramatic at times. It's part of the charm of Babble-On 5.

Sadly, it will probably be 12 days after never for that show to get remastered. While that show was also done on film stock, the digital effect master files are totally missing (the ones from Foundation moved to Netter Digital which apparently promptly lost them), so it'd be a significant investment (the digital effects were also rendered in 4:3 so they'd need to be completely redone).

Some new CGI models and sequences have already been done that reconstruct shots from the original series, however. The credit sequence for the "Lost Tales" DVD (new window) is *not* the same model and scripting as was used in "Sleeping in Light". The station model is *much* more detailed, as are the explosion renderings and the Non-Aligned World ships. So it's *possible*, but since Babylon 5 was very influential for sci-fi writers, but not very influential amongst sci-fi *fans* (outside of Britain, where it was very popular), my hope for a remastering is very small indeed.

/plus, principle actors keep dying from that damn show, what the hell, man

They'll have to. It was completely CG.

The Conspiracy parasites were stop-motion animated. They could conceivably use the same animation and add blur to them.

Shot on film, edited on video for season 1 and *I think* part of season 2.
