Well, it is interesting that the genotype can crank this phenotype out with the application of certain doses of hormones, but without some environmental challenge this type would be a huge net drag on its colony. The colony make the ants it needs, any more is a waste of energy and resources.

Ants don't have degrees in economics, nor are they mindless automatons. They're actually quite interesting and usually the ans the colony "needs" are the ants that happen to be on hand, for weal or for woe. You should read the book Ants At Work for more in depth.

But I think the big discovery here isn't "Whoa, we can give these ladies prehistoric heads." but "Whoa, one hormone can activate this retro DNA strand." Imagine if the same ideas could be applied to birth defects and such to give our babbys even better chances of being worthy of the Spartan elders.

I don't know. Even if we could develop this type of technology for use on human babbys, do you think we should? After all, how well could a huge-headed babby actually hope to succeed in protecting the house against a raid by army babbys?

Leiningen surveyed his position. A dispassionate observer would have estimated the odds against him at a thousand to one. But then such an on-looker would have reckoned only by what he saw--the advance of myriad battalions of ants against the futile efforts of a few defenders--and not by the unseen activity that can go on in a man's brain.

This phenotype was probably exactly what it needed to be a very long time ago. Like they're finding with experiments in turning on dinosaur-like features in developing baby birds, it seems that genotypes never forget what they once were; they just turn off or never activate segments that are no longer useful. Which makes sense, from an evolutionary standpoint they may need to incorporate aspects of that ancient form again if conditions change. You evolutionary biologists correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my understanding.

Strolpol: 2012 is slowly turning into a 50s B-Movie.

Seriously. Dinosaur, cheetah and bipedal robots. Mind readers, dream readers, downloading skills directly into the brain (I know kung fu!), Multiple-genomed monkeys, synthetic lifeforms, super ants. All of it real.

Strange days coming. Very soon.

Don't panic.
I'm sure scientists will have a freakish super-soldier anteater to sell us once they release these onto the public.

How about a realistic slogan: "We're either unemployed, hate our jobs, have no sex life, or hate our family."

I am pretty sure those are Marauder ants. Their workers, all in the same colony, come in three sizes naturally: minor, media, major.

I am guessing that the scientists just figured out how the ants "make" a major worker.

Patton Oswalt was right. Doesn't matter how pro science you are, sometimes science is just wrong, and gives us shiat we don't need, like mutant ants. I keep waiting to wake up one morning and see a bunch of scientists beaming at the screen, proudly announcing that they've made cancer airborne and contagious. You're welcome, America!
