We have the internet. There is no reason to speak more than one language. Maybe a couple of side ones if you need to be super-serial about something without everyone getting all up in your bidness.

The problem is choosing the winning language.

davidphogan: To quote a 20th century writer, "It's evolution, baby!"

...although, I admit, the question of what equations actually govern the process is a fascinating one.

jaylectricity: There is no reason to speak more than one language.

Actually, from some perspectives there are a few.

The trick is, languages hybridize far easier than species. It's even possible to retain the entirety of language A and language B as contextual subdialects of language C.

jaylectricity: The problem is choosing the winning language.

That's easy. "Tῷ Kρατίστῳ".

Immersion is great for learning languages. I took up to Spanish IV in high school but outside of class and a few trips to Mexico I just didn't use it enough. I can usually get the gist of something I read in Spanish but usually only if I look up a few vocabulary words. I could write it a little but at this point I'd be mostly guessing at where to put the stupid accent marks.

I can understand it sort of if I hear it and they don't speak too fast. I'm not confident enough to put bilingual on my resume.

2012-01-06 06:50:34 AM
I'm torn on this really. I'm all for optimization of languages to promote a faster, more efficient, and easier means of communication. Problem is, it seems (probably the key word there) to make people stupid since they don't have to think as much. Am I off track thinking along those lines?

2012-01-06 06:51:04 AM
The only part of the article that made complete sense to me was the discussion of parents not teaching a minority language to the kids. My mother was convinced a Southern accent kept her from moving up in higher management back in the 1940's, so she practically beat it out of her kids. It never occurred to her that being female was as much of a problem as being perceived as a hick. Now, people I live near don't believe I still live less than 50 miles from where I was born. OTOH, if I call anywhere outside the Deep South, everybody notices my accent. Apparently, it's not as thick as Kyra Sedgewick lays it on.

Um, no. It was that way because that was what had been in use and inherited from the Greeks and Roman style of writing. It was efforts of Catholics that developed our modern script, in an effort to make reading and writing easier.

You also realize that it was the Catholic church that funded much of the early scientific research and established the university system.

You weren't taught to read or write in the 'dark ages' unless you committed yourself to becoming a servant of the catholic church, so they cold control the roman empire's peasants, sales force.

People didn't learn to read or write during that period for the same reason people today are not taught how to fly the Space Shuttle or why people in 1890 didn't learn how to drive cars. It was a skill that most people would have never been able to use. Books at the time were scarce and expensive. It was only after the printing press was invented that there became a reason to learn to read. Even after the printing press was invented, a Bible still cost the average person 3 years wages to produce. Would you bother learning how to read when even a single book would cost several years wages?

Your statement is Ironic considering the Judeo-Christian worldview makes modern science possible. Modern science doesn't work under Pagan, Islamic, Daoism, or Athisitic worldviews. All of those worldviews are outright destructive to the scientific method, it is only by borrowing Judeo-Christian philosophy that scientists who hold to those worldviews have a reason to even start trying to do science.

The newly-born Turkish Republic did just this in order to solidify a mass of tribes under the Ottoman Empire into a country with an identity. How many languages went by the wayside? Dialects of the Black Sea were easily crushed: Laz, Abaza (both words now ethnic slurs in Turkish), Mingrel, Svan, Udi, and so on.

Other languages in the Empire were lost when the entity shrank to the boundaries of modern Turkey: Vlach and Romanian (in Romania), Berber, Albanian, Italian, Coptic, Crimean Tatar and Urum (in Ukraine), Domari, Persian, Gagauz (Moldova), Ruthenian (Slovakia),Serbian and many others.

Still others were harder to kill or absorb. Note the problems with ethnic Kurds wishing to speak their own language. Zazaki, Gorani and Talyishi are still spoken in Eastern Turkey. There is an Armenian-speaking village called Vakifli koy in the Hatay region bordering Syria.

Languages associated with religions were allowed to continue. Aramaic is still spoken at the monastery of Deyrul Zafaran, near Mardin. Arabs, though generally a despised minority, speak the language of the K'uran. Maronite Christians speak French, and Hebrew is spoken at the synagogues.

Now, before the CHP hunts me down, I'm not dissing Ataturk. Just saying that Westernizing language reform and forcing national identity through common language had serious consequences in Turkey.
