Well, it isn't now

The serviceman, who had been drinking with a woman at a bar before they returned to his residence, was showing her his 9 mm handgun when the accident occurred,

I thought you had to be a WHOLE lot smarter than that to be a SEAL.

The gun. Is always. Loaded. Dumbass.

Sounds like the dumbass was loaded, too

How the hell do you get through SEAL training, or any military training at all, and make that kind of mistake?

Sounds like every military jarhead I've ever met. Bag of rocks upstairs.

Quasar: How the hell do you get through SEAL training, or any military training at all, and make that kind of mistake?

Because you can take orders and carry them out, even in the most grueling of situations?

The man offered to let his friend hold the weapon, which he mistakenly believed was unloaded, according to Cali. When she declined, he tried to demonstrate how safe it was by putting it to his head and pulling the trigger.

The sailor, whose name was not released, graduated recently from the Navy's Sea, Air and Land Teams program, which trains elite special-operations tactical units.

Are there take-backs on graduations? 'Cause that's one hell of a blemish on the ol' image.

I'm horrified to imagine the 30 seconds that followed that decision.

evilsearat: I'm horrified to imagine the 30 seconds that followed that decision.

I'm imagining lots of screaming in terror. Again, what a tool.

I knew a chick who found her BF's body after he offed himself. She knew it was probably coming but even a couple decades later she was completely f*cked up by the event. And it wasn't a bloody suicide either.

He wasn't a Jarhead, he was NAVY. Jarheads are Marines. Having said that, he was still a dumbass.

So we have to believe her? She's obviously a spy!!!

2012-01-05 07:54:16 PM
ecmoRandomNumbers: The gun. Is always. Loaded. Dumbass.

It's only the first rule of weapon safety.

I mean, I was only a Marine so we didn't have the specialized training, but that was pretty well beaten into our heads; I don't think anyone with an IQ above freezing could get through that and do this.

2012-01-05 07:54:19 PM
Personally I prefer "the gun is always empty" approach, it has worked really good for me so far.

2012-01-05 07:54:25 PM
Remember, it aint unloaded till you clear the pipe.

2012-01-05 07:54:53 PM
Authorities initially reported that the man had died

He was then transferred to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to "alive".

Quasar: How the hell do you get through SEAL training, or any military training at all, and make that kind of mistake?

Apparently, there are people, some of them right here on Fark, who believe that once you are experienced enough, you can bypass certain rules of weapons safety because you have the training and experience to do so safely.

2012-01-05 07:56:47 PM
Man, unloaded guns sure do kill a lot of people.

2012-01-05 07:57:35 PM
I was taught to always point the firearm (loaded or not) in the safest possible direction. Now, I don't have a GED is anatomy, but somehow I think he was doing this wrong.

Well, maybe he was actually shooting for the IQ requirements for future employment by the TSA:

Since this dumbass didn't learn in Navy school or SEAL school, let's go over the 4 rules of gun handling:

1. All guns are ALWAYS loaded
2. Don't point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
4. Know your target and what is beyond your target

and tell me Navy SEAL how does it feel to be so wise?

2012-01-05 08:01:54 PM
Was it the first time he'd ever been drunk? 'Cause if there's a point where you're likely to do something that stupid, I'd think he would have discovered it before.

2012-01-05 08:01:57 PM
Its gonna turn out that this guy is a paint chipper on some barge out at SD Naval Station and was simply lying to the chick about his SEAL prowess to get laid. The reporter talked to her, and she just repeated his bullshiat story to him.

I used to tell the chicks I was a fighter pilot, and I would show them a bit of old computer card (discrete components, man, transistors are sexay!) and tell them that was my jets "access key."

San Dog chicks are hot, but dumb as stumps.

2012-01-05 08:02:01 PM
I'm no Navy Seal, but I did take a gun safety course as a twelve year old.

Treat all guns as though they are loaded and dont point it at anything unless you intend to kill it.

2012-01-05 08:03:25 PM
Most dumb-asses would point the gun up in the air and pull the trigger.
Pointing the gun at your head? That's just 100% pure Stupid.

ecmoRandomNumbers: The gun. Is always. Loaded. Dumbass.

This a million times over. The second most important rule that my dad taught me? Never shoot at anything that you don't intend to kill.

/not a gun nut, but this should be common knowledge

Quasar: How the hell do you get through SEAL training, or any military training at all, and make that kind of mistake?

I see all this time, whether military or civillian. People become so fluent with weaponry they think the basic rules dont apply to them. I pretty much have q radar for when a muzzle is flashing me, i mean literally from behind back my back my periphals will just catch it and it feels like a beam of red heat is hitting me. I cant explain it.

I tell some dude to watch his muzzle, and all of sudden Im getting some diatribe about how his daddy had him shooting a dime at 100 meters before i was just a nutstain blah blah.

Likewise, i take extra consideration on my muzzle. Like pointing it to the ground when i need to get around people, and people think its like a nervous reaction from not knowing what im doing. No actually, I just know what it is like getting dlagged, and though i know its not loaded, i know that you DONT know its not loaded so its a sign of farking respect.

Way too common attitude, even amongst professionals.
