I'm not trying to ITG here, but I was thinking the same thing. That clothesline was horrendous and could have really hurt that kid.

You know, one might be more sympathetic to the whole "he's just a big teddy bear" line if he didn't have a "Take *that* mother farker!" look on his face after each foul.

2012-01-05 04:21:24 PM
I think he just a really bad and lazy basketball player. If he got kicked out of a few games for doing that crap, he would stop. Then he could carry on being a bad basketball player, but probably not hurting anyone. The problem is the officiating. They have to make him pay for not playing the game correctly.

Good point.

What's clear to me is that the big kid isn't on the team because he has any skill at basketball. He's just big. He has no idea how to play actual defense and fancies himself a shot blocker trying to swat everything that's near him even though he has like a 4 inch vertical.

2012-01-05 04:29:21 PM
I don't follow basketball and really only know that the ball is round and there are baskets at both ends of the court, but a couple of those, the first one for instance, looked to me like he was going for the ball, but was just too fat and uncoordinated to get to it.

/also: yes, we see the fouls, there's no reason to replay them in slo-mo three times.

exick: What's clear to me is that the big kid isn't on the team because he has any skill at basketball....

Indeed. The one where he punched the kid in the face with his forearm maybe wasn't necessarily trying to hurt him. It looked to me, in that instance, he probably wanted to make a strong block from the ground (because as you noted he can't jump) and just had no coordination in doing so. He was probably trying to go for the ball, and is just so bad at it he completely missed. Then, likely due to poor coaching and never being called on it, he realized he missed the ball, might as well 'get his money's worth' on the foul.

Essentially, he's just lazy and not really a basketball player. The coach was thinking, "Hmm, we have no one over 6'2" to play center, why not Zoidberg noseguard?" The part that bothers me more is what others have mentioned. Did he try to make sure that last kid who he knocked out of the air was ok? Nope. The fact that he plays tackle basketball isn't as disconcerting as the fact that no one seems to have a problem with it and he doesn't display any sportsmanship.

I think most of those fouls were because those kids don't have a clue how to properly play basketball. A couple of those were uncalled for though. The clothesline should have been a flagrant foul and shoving the kid to the ground was uncalled for. I have more of a problem with the coaches for letting this go on than I do the kids. Neither one of them strike me as having real skill at playing basketball.

Whoever posted this video is a douche, though. These are high school kids and most of those fouls weren't flagrants, they were just hard fouls from a couple of doughboys who have little to no coordination.

when fat kid got subbed out, another fat kid was coming in for him. where did all these fat basketball players come from?

2012-01-05 06:20:44 PM
did anyone consider that they just absolutely suck at the game and are incapable of moving like a normal human should?

WaltzingMathilda: when fat kid got subbed out, another fat kid was coming in for him. where did all these fat basketball players come from?

There may not be a lot of kids to choose from at this high school. The population of the entire town of Connell, WA is 4,200 so their high school probably doesn't have a large (no pun intended) student body. My guess is that the vast majority of kids that want to play will get on the team.

You're giving him too much credit. I don't think that boy could clear a sheet of paper

"Fatty McFat-fat goes full James Harrison "

I didn't see fatty run back an interception, in the Super Bowl, for 99 yards and a TD.

Thug ball, thank John Thompson and Michael Graham.

Small town, small high school, crappy pool of kids to choose from to play. They are a whoppinig 1-7 this year so even if this is a strategy of theirs to intimidate the opponent, it's not working. Link (new window)

Probably from the football team once the season ended. That's small town basketball.

//yes, some teams have them

Perhaps now that this video has surfaced, the risk of serious injury to some of these kids will be lessened.

Those moves/fouls were completely uncalled for. Now the school, coach, and officials are on notice: if a kid is seriously hurt because nothing was done to clean up the play, they will be in the hotseat, answering charges of negligence or worse.

i haven't watched the video yet but i think we can safely assume what race the offending player is and how low his shorts (or "draws" as they call them) hang. this is what happens when you don't just put ten nice young white boys out there

2012-01-05 07:05:40 PM
The kid would make a great rugby player, but he can't play basketball worth a damn.

Also holy shiat that fifth foul is scary.

2012-01-05 07:27:42 PM
hard != flagrant

It looks like they #'s 3 and 4 could probably be called flagrant because it's hard to make a case that they were going for the ball. Even though #4 appeared to be intentional/flagrant, there was no damage done since it was a little push so I'm good with the regular foul call..

That only leaves #3...4 out of 5 right ain't bad.

2012-01-05 07:28:38 PM
take fatty to Rucker and see if he wants to continue playing the sport afterward

Well, there were ten white boys out there, I just wouldn't call two of them exactly "nice".

Well at least the inbred fat kid is getting plenty of attention over it

Yeah, but how long was this shiat going on before someone finally decided to get a video of it and call them on it? When the people you would hope would do something about it don't, then there's not a whole lot left to do. Judging by the coaches reponse it's clear they don't feel anything was wrong.

And I think we can all agree that the refs are blind.

The officiating looked to be horrible.

That kid looks like a thug and he is pretty damn smug about it.

Yeah.....I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're not familiar with Connell Washington.

This is what Connell has to offer (new window)

Good on those kids for continuing to take the ball hard to the rim. It looked like they were trying to embarrass the thuggish players on the white team and they did a good job. The maroon team did a good job of keeping their composure, staying focused, and I assume willing the game.

Some of those werent flagrant but that kid needed to get taken out of the game. He was embarrassing himself, the coach, and his school with his shiatty play.

2012-01-05 07:53:23 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like all of these fouls were called.

/I admit, I know nothing about basketball

1, Basketball is a contact sport; no matter what else happens, someone will get hurt - don't like it, don't play
2. Bad officiating is as much a part of the game as the ball - get used to it
3. Fat dude needs to get his ass kicked

He doesnt need to get his ass kicked. He looked like a dick out there. The maroon team handled that situation perfectly.

They refs, the coach, and the fat-ass did not. Some of those were technical fouls and they werent called which allowed the play to get rougher and rougher. Basketball is a contact sport where people are defenseless while flying through the air. The refs shouldnt allow for people to get hit with cheap shots.

Some fat lazy jerk who's playing his role well. That's what he's there to do, judging by those tone deaf comments by the coach.

I have to agree

When the offender was replaced I couldn't believe it would be by someone fatter.

Not really flagrent - just bad D

In bush league junior hockey in Canada, every team has one of these fat-a$$es. Can't skate, can't play but intimidates. Its poor coaching, poor sportsmanship, and poor ref'ing, however it will undoubtedly continue.
