Finally we will know how many humans can be uncomfortably crammed into one of those things.

Isn't it great to see technology of what we used to call "3rd world countries" now surpassing that of US because of all the idiots in the US who think we should be trying to make this country like it was in the 1800's?

Pod transport system in India? I've seen that on the Top Gear Christmas special a few days ago:

Very unimpressed with the idea of millions of people 'doing the needful' in its pods:
/if this is a national project then it should be prefixed with an 'i', you know like i-pod. Catchy eh?

Yep, the original plans for EPCOT are both fascinating, and terrifying in their own little ways.
you had the theme park at the northern end of the property.. the big contained self copntained R&D Epcot community in the center, and a mass transportation hub at the southern tip. all of it connected via the monorail on the surface, and subterranean roads for services underneath. everything feathering out from the hubs via the Pods/PRT/ WEDway systems.
Old Walt Died of lung cancer while drawing out that whole vision with fingers on the ceiling of his hospital room .. and it all became this muted Blown up 1964 worlds fair vision of the future.
Like I said.. I find the whole thing fascinating and terrifying and wonder what our world would be like if that original vision had actually come to pass.
because.. lets face it.. the thing in the article isn't really much more than a regular trolly or urban light railroad.. but of course neither is the WEDway and supporting monorail system either. the revolutionary idea was the implementation and urban planning around it.

We need something like this here in the US. There are more land whales over here.

As a new resident of south orlando, I have yet to understand why there isn't a monorail running from disney straight down 192. It would get so many of the crazy tourists off the road ,for the commuters happiness, and maybe give them a bit of time to relax going to/from the parks. Plus maybe give more business to all the other restaurants along the strip. Oooh. Maybe have another running parallel across 536 through the convention center area. Of course while I'm wishing, I'd like a high speed train that travels from tampa to orlando to miami. It's flat and dry, how hard could it be?

Like I said, the orginal plan for the area was to have a mass transit hub at the southern tip of the property. that was to be a International Airport with rail, bus, and car terminal. and all traffic inside the property would be via highspeed monorail connecting the City and the parks within that property with the PRT system fanning out from main monorail station hubs.
most traffic coming into the property would be via the international Airport, with Attention given to Heavy rail and vehicular traffic.. all vehicular traffic would have been parked at the main infux transportation hub. service and other vehicles would have been routed through subterrain "highways. there would have been no surface traffic within the property itself.
now..as for Highspeed rail anywhere else in the state? flat and dry yes, but High speed reail demands that there is no cross road traffic. it has to be a Dedicated rail line with the only stops being the rail stations in between.. so, it in rural areas it could be surface, but any where else, it must be elevated.
that's pretty damn expensive to build, and as for the flat land area? people own that junk, so you gotta either get land use rights, or press eminent domain to seize the land for use.People in this country don't usually give stuff up like that for such "socialist" ideas. of high speed rail.
