Oh, but please, let's keep cutting police and other emergency worker jobs. that'll solve everything.

Well, you wanted services cut.

Disgraceful...

I loved the "I'll bet all of them were having their champagne at midnight, though" (while pointing at City Hall) quote.

Can we just wall off Detroit and make it a dumping ground full of decaying buildings and criminals? Officially I mean.

I'm assuming that everybody is joking and realizes that you can still call 911 and there will still be police officers at the station.

I heard a rumour that Ted Nugent goes crossbow hunting the homeless in Detroit at night and has paid off the cops.

What kind of job at the police department is 'timekeeper'?

Demetrius: What kind of job at the police department is 'timekeeper'?

www.policecatalog.com

This makes $40 an hour for 40 hours a week.
$60 for 20 hours

and $80 for the 108 hours.

/Always on duty.

2012-01-05 01:14:53 PM
I'd buy that for a dollar!

2012-01-05 01:15:02 PM
You don't actually call the police when someone is trying to kill you and they actually get there before the situation has already resolved. You call the police so someone can come fill out a police report. That can wait till morning.

And where are the concealed carry opponents now? Hiding under their beds, crying into cell phones.

2012-01-05 01:18:42 PM
It's the precincts that are closing, not emergency services. If somebody steals your car, you'll have to wait until the next morning to report it. That's all

When my 5th-grade class was on a field trip to a Detroit police station (1980s), they showed us the place where the "at the tone the time will be" phone lady originated from. Big closet full of old-school telephone equipment.

Okay, I love a good bash the pigs thread as much as anyone else, but come on...

FTFA: "According to a department document obtained by the Free Press, several job assignments -- including report clerk, desk clerk, law enforcement information network operator, security officer, timekeeper, and vehicle and building maintenance officers -- will be eliminated.

The purpose of the plan, officials said, is to get more officers from behind a desk and onto the street."

So no police are being eliminated, you can still call 911, and cops will still respond. What am I missing here?

It sounds like a job in which safety is not guaranteed and you must bring your own weapons.

Wow, a clerk is on that list! The occasional file is going to have to wait until the morning before being entered into the archives! It'll be anarchy!

Jack Black 62: Looks like the people of Detroit will have to protect themselves.

that is nothing new. There are places in Detroit that a call to 911 will result in the question "Can you move the body to a safer location?" because Police, Fire and Ambulance vehicles get shot at on a regular basis (called Little Saigon for a reason)

I grew up there. You are on your own and its been that way since the early 90s

That there will be more police on the street to respond to that call?

Wow, I had no idea that when 20% of the people in the city don't work, and 3 of the 4 biggest employers in the city are the city/state governments, there'd be a significant drain on tax revenues to fund those positions! It's almost like...when people don't work/can't work, the city can't afford to pay its bills! WHODA THUNKIT?

How's that "Most Liberal City in America" title workin' out for ya? All those handouts are making things work well, clearly. Don't worry, vote in more Dems and they'll fix everything by giving away more money that isn't theirs, and that they don't have.

Detroit is at the loosing end of 40 years of Brain Drain.

All the smart people left long ago to find jobs. All that's left is a group of people dumb enough to stay in Detroit. Come on people, sell what you can and leave. But nooo, the people who are still there have reasons to be there, right. "This is where my mother raised me" is an excuse to sit in a shiathole until you die.

Your'e right. I honestly cannot think of a better argument than history. This is the legacy of socialist leadership in Detroit and elsewhere. Liberals please be honest with yourselves and take a good look at the historical results of the policies you hold dear. I'm not disparaging your motives, nor am I calling you less intelligent than myself. I'm simply pointing out that the economic policies of liberal leaders have had their chance and the policies failed. It's time to rethink the ideology. I mean no disrespect and harbor no ill will. I just want you to critically examine the historical results. Please, the future is at stake here.

"Hello, and welcome to the Detroit Police Department Resc-u-Fone. If you know the name of the felony being committed, press one. To choose from a list of felonies, press two. If you are being murdered or calling from a rotary phone, please stay on the line ... You have selected 'regicide'. If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press one."

I don't know if it's the same one, but there's an episode where Wiggum answers the phone with, "No, you got the wrong number. This is nine-one....two."
