One of the last specimens of massive bluefin tuna that are slowly being driven to extinction?
We saw it happen with white tail deer. Pic from 100 years ago showed deer with massive antlers. Now, you're lucky if you see a 6 point.
Mark my words. If it keeps up, we'll end up with antlerless deer in this country, and smaller tuna in the oceans.

That can't be true. All the Fark hunters tell us they are the true shepherds of the wild and they only kill what they are going to eat on the way back to the hunting lodge.

This is interesting to think about and it's certainly possible.
There are enough whitetail in the U.S. for the population to never be in any danger, but as hunters take deer with large antlers, they are selecting for deer with smaller/no antlers. Give it a few hundred years and evolution will take care of the rest.

thats like 1.3k a pound
at those prices you know there are some biology geeks figuring out how to grow that meat in a vat
and seriously how do the restaurant patrons know? do they do a DNA test each time they eat?
if I owned a place that sold this stuff I would just lie, sell some similar fish that cost me a lot less, and make sure the money was offshore in case I got caught

Lol. Michigan is chock full of "Let 'Em Go, Let 'Em Grow" signs, begging hunters to not shoot small antlered deer.
There was even a problem with the northern pike size limit, you could only keep those 22" and above, problem was, the females reached that size before the males. One got to wondering where all the pike had gone, let alone the massive ones you used to be able to catch, then it occurred to them they might want to raise the size limit so the damn things could actually breed.
Perhaps, just perhaps, they should cut back the harvest of these tuna. But, scarcity only makes the problem (the amount of cash you can get for a fish that large) worse. Doesn't matter if it is from lowered harvest by mandate or as a consequence of overfishing.

Yeah, that's sad. What's also sad is the insane demand for those fish in Japan. I know of at least two instances where a fishing boat out of a NC port caught big bluefin tuna, and literally burned their engines out getting them back to port ASAP. There were agents waiting for them on the dock with a check big enough to pay to replace the engines and the rest of their fishing season, just for that one fish. The tuna would be packed in dry ice and flown directly to Japan, where it would be carved up for sushi or whatever it is they do with them.

The sea-food industry never got beyond the hunter-gatherer stage of developement. For meat and poultry have domesticated and farm-raised animals, but with fish it is still netting and hooking wild species.
The equipment used may be more modern, but the strategy is still Paleolithic.
