I'm worried about the Pats. They have the worse defense in the entire NFL, and they played against the weakest schedule for the last 5-6 games of the season. I get this feeling that a playoff team is really going to slap them around.

Jets fan here, and let me tell you that you are exactly wrong. Confidence is what this team lacked since forever. We were the losers of the AFC and it was our thing. Rex Ryan brought a blue collar-style football that we as Jets fans love, and he brought confidence that they can win. Something that is as foreign to Jets fans as winning is. What did them in this year was no running game, no O-line, Schottenfired sucking it up, and a GM who brought in a bunch of Santiono Homles.

FTFA:
"
In the summer of 2010
Brady, also appearing on WEEI, said that he hated the Jets when he was asked by the hosts of the Dennis and Callahan show if he was watching the Jets on HBO's "Hard Knocks."
"Honestly, I haven't turned it on.
I hate the Jets
, so I refuse to support the show," he said at the time

Tampa Bay had the worst defense in the entire NFL this year. Now that the Patriots have Mayo and Chung back, they are actually slightly above average.
It's sort of odd that this year the four teams that have given up the most passing yards in the league (Packers, Patriots, Saints and Giants) all made the playoffs and have home field advantage the first weekend of play.
I have no dog in this fight, but am sort of glad the Jets are not in the playoffs because I am sick of hearing about "Revis Island".
Yeah, he's a good corner, but STFU about it already.

They had a bizarre schedule. They have something like 7 wins against teams that were 8-8 exactly (obviously, those teams all have winning records in games not against the Pats).

Seriously, I don't get all the Jets hate on Fark. If people want to hate a New York team they should pick the Giants, who are overwhelmingly favored by the Jersey/Staten Island douchebags and front-runners. Carl Brutananadilewski exists, folks; there are thousands of Carl Brutananadilewskis out there. It would be easier to like the Jets if Rex didn't bloviate all over the city like a verbal Mr. Creosote (as opposed to gastric). Doesn't help that the team itself walks with a swagger that it has yet to earn. All that said, I have no problem with the fans. It's just that the organization acts like the youngest sibling that doesn't get enough attention and has to act out constantly. Nobody likes that kid.

The Jet's don't lack confidence...they lack a competent QB. I honestly don't know the reasons some QB succeed and other fail. But after 3 seasons in the league Sanchez is still far to inconsistent, still makes far too many killer mistakes...and doesn't seem to be making progress.
After 3 years he's been demoted from game manager to "please don't do something the defense can fix...." The jets probably have to keep him around for another year or so becuase of his contract and lack of anything else behind him.....in the hopes that something just clicks....but as of right now (and the foreseeable future)..he's not the answer.
As for why no one like the Jets....it's becuase they don't shut up...ever. They talk so much trash. They boo other teams at the draft...every year is "their year"...their coach boasts about a guaranteed SB rings and how he is the team to beat...he simultaneously slams his team and another NFL coach/organization by saying if he'd coached the chargers the last decades he'd have 2-3 rings...
Instead of being the underdog and loveable loser (like the 2004 redsox) that everyone wants to win and wants to see upset the evil empire (see giants v. patriots in 2007)...they talk so much trash day after day, week after week.....they move away from being someone to root for and become that annoying kid who boasts about how great he is, how great his dad is, how much his parent make, and how awesome is birthday is going to be....that you can't help but snicker when no one shows up.

They're really similar. They're 31 and 32 in passing yards against and 1-2 in picks. I guess it makes sense to just gamble for turnovers if your offense scores more often than not when you get them the ball.

Mike McCarthy is about as vanilla as a head coach gets.
There was a headline on an article during all of the 16-0 talk that said something like, "Mike McCarthy is the most boring coach in sports history, and that's the way he likes it." He is intentionally bland in front of the media, but supposedly behind closed doors he is hilarious and quite animated.

You're right, the other coaches probably are, by and large dicks BUT he is so far over the top compared to them that he's in a different league in terms of what and how he shoots his mouth off ... and the city he's in certainly acts as an enabler. I don't hate Rex. Far from it. He is entertaining. All I meant is that he makes it REALLY fun to root against the Jets. He and the team's swagger make it easy to dislike them. I don't want Rex or that attitude to go away. Every league needs heels. He's the NFL's.

Watching Dallas lose will never stop being the most magical thing on the planet. The Jets are harmless losers who will never win anything again, they're as relevant as an abicus. But Dallas schadenfreude? C'mon; even angels up in heaven sing from the top of their little angel lungs when Dallas is eliminated.

I'm biased as a Pats fan, but I had no problem with Rex and the Jets in his first year (outside of not wanting them do well because they're a division rival). He came in wanting to change the culture of a losing franchise, so I took his outlandish and boorish ways with a pretty big grain of salt and respected what he was trying to do.
By this point, the Jets have long "arrived" as a regular playoff contender with him at the helm. The constant, weekly announcements of their supposed superiority over their opponent for that week, or over the AFC in general, rings so goddamn hollow since he's been doing it for three years now, it's now more than annoying; it's pathetic. I thought Rex's "act" was perfect in year one of his reign. Now, please just STFU and coach.

I'd be concerned and worried, too, but it's not like the rest of the AFC field doesn't have their own warts. The worst-case scenario for this weekend for the Pats (IMHO) is Pittsburgh and Houston winning, sending the Steelers into Foxboro. The Steelers D is capable of slowing the Pats passing game down, and even an injured Roethlisberger should put up serviceable numbers against the Pats secondary. Throw in the fact that Baltimore should handle Houston at home and you'd be looking at a team that matches up well against the Pats coming into a place they've won before in January.
I'd feel confident against Pittsburgh, but I'd rather see Denver or Cincy coming up here next weekend, especially if it involves sending Pittsburgh into Baltimore. Let those two beat up on each other and wait for a rookie QB to come to town for Divisional Weekend.
/I know Cincy is dangerous

Green bay was not giving up those yards to terrible teams and terrible QBs and all in the first quarter.
The last two games the patriots went down 17-0 and 21-0 to the dolphins and bills....teams are just marching down the field and scoring at will...You can't get away with that in the playoffs...teams are too good. Thepatriots lost in the last couple playoff games against the Jets last year and ravens the year before becuase they got down early and could never make any sort of comeback...teams have good defenses and usually decent QB who can make things happen.

I'm a Pats fan in the same boat, but for me it's also that the Jets have plenty of talent and they're wasting it, a lot like the Chargers did over the last decade or so. I'm not complaining, of course, it's funny to watch a team with some real top notch talent (Mangold, Harris, Revis to name a few) get done in by their own coaching or slapdick "star players".

Jets fans are a long-suffering bunch and should enjoy a little prosperity once in a while.
No they shouldn't.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really get the Rex Ryan hate. If what he does is trash talk and act arrogantly, it's all pretty weak. Saying at the beginning of the season your team will go to the Super Bowl is "talking too much"? How, if you have a team that is not rebuilding, does any coach not feel this way? Is that what passes as bulletin board material? If you're that sensitive that someone else expressing confidence sets you off, I feel bad for the woman you've been with. Not you. I guess I can understand the off-handed Chargers comment, but we all know that's pretty close to true as well. Granted I don't watch or read Jets news regularly, but nothing Rex Ryan does strikes me as particularly out of line.

anthrax0r: DeltaPunch: I'm worried about the Pats. They have the worse defense in the entire NFL, and they played against the weakest schedule for the last 5-6 games of the season. I get this feeling that a playoff team is really going to slap them around.
Does anyone actually realize the worst defense statistically was Green Bay, or is everyone choosing to ignore this because we're all told New England is bad? NE is even middle of the pack in points allowed at 15. You know who's worse? GB at 19.
But yet GB is in a great position and NE is not? I don't get it
Green bay was not giving up those yards to terrible teams and terrible QBs and all in the first quarter.
Really?
Green Bay gave up 23 to the Panthers, 27 to the Vikings, 26 to the Buccaneers, and LOST 19-14 to the Chefs. Those teams were a combined 20-44 this season. The Packers also gave up 23 to the Broncos, 38 to the Chargers, and 35 to the Giants. Despite there being two division winners in the second group, those teams went a combined 25-23 on the season.

Psst. Look at the record of the teams that beat Baltimore this year.

Mark Sanchez, Santonio Holmes & a third round pick for Peyton Manning. More than fair.
This is a New York Post type of trade proposal, but not one with any basis in reality.

While I think that'd be fair in the long run, Indy is going to need a lot more than that to let go of one of the best QBs ever. Add Revis or a 1st rounder and they'll probably take it.

he simultaneously slams his team and another NFL coach/organization by saying if he'd coached the chargers the last decades he'd have 2-3 rings...
To be fair, that's probably true. He'd have a good shot at at least one, anyway.

A decent speed threat WR, a terrible QB and a third rounder for Peyton Manning?

The constant, weekly announcements of their supposed superiority over their opponent for that week, or over the AFC in general, rings so goddamn hollow since he's been doing it for three years now, it's now more than annoying; it's pathetic.
The Jets are the best team in football history for 165 hours a week. It's just bad luck that the other 3 hours so often happen on Sunday afternoons.
Also, I wish the Patriots would pull off a couple surprise onside kicks now and then. Best case, you stun the other team and Brady gets the ball at the 50. Worst case, the other team gets the ball at the 50, but who cares, they'd be there in three plays anyway.

I disagree on some of those as Rivers and Manning are pretty good QBs. Giving up all those yards/points to guys like Orton and Hanie though, yeesh.
