(Salon) Ironic Rick Santorum is now channeling St. Augustine. I wonder if he knows St. Augustine was a bastard drunkard whore-of-a-man who turned to the church only because his mommy told him to?   (salon.com) divider line 27

I'll be St Augustine never had to stand in a garbage can and confess to 200 Scientologists. Or did he, and the Templars supressed the knowledge?

Come for the brilliant 4th Century thinking, stay for the lingering Santorum problem.

Wait, Santorum had to do this? Pray, elaborate.

Also, the locus of "historical things (even about Catholicism and the history of its books) that Rick Santorum understands", in a Venn diagram with "the history of Catholicism and its books" would probably look like porn boobs.

FWIW, Judaism (the Orthodox kind, not the batshiat "skin is sin" morons) says that any sex between married couples is A-OK so long as everyone gives consent. A remarkably progressive view, apparently even for today.

// though "everyone" is limited to the people married to each other
// and, since there's no more polygamy, I haz a sad

Oh, Bartholomew, I feel like St. Augustine of Hippo after his conversion by Ambrose of Milan

So, Augustine thought he was oversexed, which makes him like someone who wants to suppress sex. Hemingway probably thought he drank too much, which must make him exactly like Carrie Nation.

Methinks the author's knowledge of the saint, like Santorum's, is rudimentary at the very best.

I'm still not sure how "small government" fits into the fascist idea of government determining who bangs who and how often one gets to do it.

Conservatives? Can you expand?

Relax, have a cigar, make yourself at home. Hell is full of high court judges, failed saints. We've got Cardinals, Archbishops, barristers, certified accountants, music critics, they're all here. You're not
alone.

You're never alone.

Not here you're not.

Okay, break's over.

His repressive sexual politics are a rear-guard rebellion against modernity

Heh heh... he said "rear guard."

I love that song so much.

I also love In The Garden Of Allah, to round out the "Satan's monologue" theme. :)

St. Augustine of Hippo famously said, "Truth does not contradict truth."

NoGods of FARK says, "Faith often contradicts faith. Therefore faith is not an indication of truth."

The Pope has decreed that evolution does not conflict with Catholic dogma. Is Santorum one of those republicans that denied belief in evolution?

These are old school catholic teachings. Why people don't understand is the populace has never seen what a strict catholic is like. They have the Kennedy version of the Church. There is at least one of these wackos in every parish and their job is to make everyone else feel like their weekly trek to a building to listen to a 50 year old virgin speak isn't that crazy.

Found it. He thinks the Bible is the literal truth.

Leave it to the Republicans to find a Roman Catholic with an advanced degree who sounds like Jesse Helm's id.

BitwiseShift: Or did he, and the Templars supressed the knowledge?

It's funny that you mentioned the Templars, because the trial of the Templars put on by Philip IV and Pope Clement V (which ultimately lead to the disbanding of the Templar order and the burning of many of the Templars at the stake) specifically accused the Templars of conduct such as stripping each other naked and kissing each other on the posterior and navels (which, I assume, is some sort of euphemism for oral sex).

Yes, he is one of those, but I have a feeling he also is one of those Catholics who is not a fan of The Vatican II: Electric Bugaloo

Yeah, unfortunately early theologians, especially St. Augustine, commingled Christian scripture with some weird Plato-inspired ideas prominent in the Eastern Roman Empire that decries the physical world as an evil, corrupt prison and the spiritual world as wholly good. In that worldview, any physical pleasure is a trap and deviation from the ultimate goal, which is to destroy the physical self and release oneself to the spiritual realm.

That's why you get the really hard-core Catholics eating sparse diets, whipping themselves and shunning sex.

Hmm, explains why the Wikipedia article said that Thomas Aquinas was more optimistic about original sin than Augustine.

If, according to Santorum, the only acceptable sex is marital reproductive sex, how come Mrs. Santorum doesn't have 25 kids already?

It's nothing to brag about, believe me, but I've got a 1st cousin, married to another 1st cousin, and both echo Santorum on this matter.

So, how many kids do my married-to-each-other, much-much-holier-than-me, 1st cousins have?

One.
