Actually the only character I can remember saying "Gorram" is Jayne.

I, too, was annoyed by this. But I was also annoyed at the horrible pacing of BSG and just couldn't get into it.

You get points for taking his last name to parody rather than Benedict, which would have been too easy.

He's excellent as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC series. My wife has a thing for him, so I mutiliate his name as often as I can. Otto von Cumberbun, Darious Badnderstatch, etc

Know how I know you're angry that it took a reboot for Star Trek movies to be good again?

Sure, whatever you think that means, I thought the movie was entertaining.

Yes, it managed to disappoint both fans (by killing off a beloved character) and newbs (none of the characters meant anything to someone not already familiar with them).

Yep, it sucked that Book died.

You're doing yourself a disservice.

It's not that I don't want to see it, but I already have too many TV shows that I'm trying to catch up on. That and after so many Star Trek series, I'm kind of burnt out on the whole "eclectic group of space exploreres and their amazing adventures in space" theme.

Also, I gave up on BSG because I just got sick to death of every other word being "frack". If you're going to use faux profanity, use it sparingly. Too much and it sounds farking ridiculous.

I understand Firefly has the same gorram problem.

Most of the real heavy swearing is in Chinese (Mandarin I think). It's not made up, and it's supposed to show how China had a major impact in the colonization of the Verse. There are a few words repurposed, as you'd expect several hundred years in the future. Shiny, for example, means "good" or "cool", but it's not overwhelming.

And it's less about a merry band of explorers and more about a group of semi-outlaws trying not to get killed and make a little money at the same time.

I believe "gorram" came about because Fox wouldn't let them say "goddamn", so blame Fox for that one.

/My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

WaltzingMathilda: Disposable Rob: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Was there a trend of REALLY British names 20-30 years back?

probably in great britain there was.

these people you named aren't from f*cking ohio.

Really? I could have sworn Benedict Cumberbatch was born in Dayton.

I seriously love him. Sherlock is excellent, imo, and I'm just getting to finally see the latest episode, which aired on New Year's Day. :D

Well, at least we know that the second movie will NOT be Khan-related. Benedict may be a good looking dude - but a genetically engineered "perfect human" warrior prince he is not.

WaltzingMathilda: 90% of you people didn't know what lens flare was before the movie, didn't notice it when you saw the movie, but later jumped on the geek bandwagon when you saw it as a criticism of the movie because you were looking for a reason to hate it.

That's idiotic. How could anyone NOT notice it while watching the movie? How? People might not have known what to call it at first, but they noticed it. I had no idea what it was called but one of my best friends works in movies and he told me. Not being blind and having seen any number of motion pictures before, I still saw it and was annoyed by it before I knew the name of it.

my point was they didn't "notice" it as in they didn't notice it as something to get all "LOL STOOPID MOVIE" about it. maybe you did. i didn't say 100%.

not if you are referring to my comment as somehow being pro JJ Abrams. the movie was enjoyable, but i haven't watched it since. LOST i would watch over and over. Fringe, i don't care about, and didn't like it much. given the variety in my reactions to Abrams, i'm hardly his biggest defender.

my point is that it's a dumb thing to trash it over. i made this point yesterday ... you people flip out over lens flare, but your beloved franchise had time traveling whales. at that point, i say anything is fair game and completely acceptable.

You may be thinking of Farscape, thats not really a thing on Firefly. But it wasnt annoying on Farscape like it was on BSG. And TBH i like Farscape better than Firefly or BSG, buf if youve never seen Firefly you should watch it. And then watch Farscape.

Add me to the list of people who knew the term 'lens flare' and thought there were too many in Super 8 when I saw it.

In Trek is just looked like he was going for a 'future's so bright you gotta wear shades' vibe, so it worked for me there. But in dusty, 70's Ohio - espeically in the nighttime scenes - there was no reason for them. When the space ship arrived it was cool, but in an empty train station at night felt like a weird place for them. It made them highly distracting.

Still good movies, though.

Lookig forward to the new ST. Didn't notice that much lense flare in the last one. Super 8 however......

2012-01-05 03:05:38 PM
The first movie (I remember) seeing a fake lens flare in was The Phantom Menace. If you watched the new ST and didn't notice it you probably weren't paying attention. If you were told about it beforehand it is distracting.

actually, JJ contacted me about including my spock/draco malfoy short story in the new movie but the whole thing fell apart when he refused to shoot it as graphically as the scene deserved. i'm not going to compromise my vision for that prick. f*ck you lens flare abrams.

If I had that picture of a bunch of sheep filing into a movie theater, I'd post it here.

And Paramount were dumbass for rejecting my "Voyage on the Hoizon" spec script. Not only would the intricate storyline have taken the franchise to a whole new level, the character of Ensign Galunga was one of great wit and intellect, whose heroism inspires the crew to new heights, and would have been a revered part of Star Trek lore. Plus, he gets to nail Uhura. In the pooper.

I think what he was trying to do was not ruin Firefly. Because once you watch Farscape, Firefly is going to seem awfully lame. Plus, there's more than 8 episodes.

jimb213: It was nowhere near as bad in Super 8. There was definitely some excessive lens flare, but there were maybe one or two shots where it was actually distracting, as opposed to half the shots in Star Trek.

I didn't really mind that much in Star Trek, even though I can see why it would annoy people. I thought it was obnoxious in Super 8 because half the movie seemed to have been shot in the dark... yet there were lens flares despite no light sources available. (lens flare in a cave? WTF?)

Maybe JJ Abrams is like Lucas. If people criticize an artistic decision of his, he gives them more of it.

I'd wager it would be Romulan to fit the severe facial angularity.

Can the lensflare meme be over now? Please? Abrams himself made fun of how much he uses them in the "Super 8" Blu-ray commentary, fer Chrissakes.

It's be the best US Open site ever!
