It's much more likely that he was sentenced by the new regime simply based on the dates. If he was sentenced by the Shah's regime because he was a supporter of the Islamic revolution, why wouldn't he return after the people he supported took over?

Also, why does he have to be some sort of supporter of the Shah? Not supporting the Islamic regime doesn't mean he's a Shah supporter. I believe (but I might be wrong), that the Islamic regime wasn't very supportive of academics and others as well.
