It only takes $34,000 a year, after taxes, to be among the richest 1% in the world. That's for each person living under the same roof, including children. (So a family of four, for example, needs to make $136,000.)

So, nope.

Thus excusing the fact that this county has the 5th highest Gini coefficient in the world, following a country known for being the world's bank, a defunct economy, and a country that has a significant portion of their people who don't use money. We're officially worse than 3rd world dictatorships at equal wealth distribution, something that a few decades ago wouldn't have been thought possible.

Just went there last month, and man. I was struck by the slum by the highway on the way from Stellenbosch into the city. Not that it existed, which I knew, but just the sheer size of it. Keep driving for 5-10 minutes and you're still going past it, one little tin hut after another.

But they did have electricity, presumably thanks to some NGO or another.

Why does Gini coefficient make a difference in countries vs. globally? If you really want equal wealth distribution, you should be writing personal checks to folks in central america, haiti, sub-saharan africa, and much of Asia, etc.

Clinton gave us that Gini coefficient, but you also have to ask, why does it matter if wealth is not as uniformly distributed as in other nations? Are you saying it is better to be living in a 3rd world dictatorship in which everyone is poor because that is more fair or something?

everyone since Nixon set foot in China has farked over the American worker.
The people of this country have allowed it's govt to send it's jobs overseas while the politicians took money from these multinationals.
they've allowed them to bankrupt us with their wars of choice and their tax cuts for the rich.

It doesn't matter what your salary is it matters what your cost of living is. I put in my salary, 20k which is in the top 11% then 2k which is the top 17%. There is nowhere in the US you could pay rent without assistance for $166/mo let alone have any money for food. Even with a roommate there aren't many places for rent less than $333/mo. I've seen the site before and it is dumber every time

Without figuring in the cost of living that is f'ng useless.

30k In rural back water gets a lot more than 30 in a major city.

Also that fun toy doesn't work after a point. Anything after a certain amount shows the same # of people richer than you. So I am going to have to call BS.

2012-01-05 10:24:47 AM
The moral of the story... nothing is farked here, dude. Nothing is farked here. So shut the fark up and go back to enjoying your prosperity and freedom.

On the other hand, this points to a few things. Inequality is a problem at both local and global scales (and you can take local to mean city, state, nation, whatever...), and that problem isn't getting better, despite years of "development." One of the fascinating, if perverse, effects of "globalization" has been to bring poverty home to "developed" countries while allowing for extreme accumulation by the elite of the elite along with some moderate gains for a relatively new "global" middle class. This is how the "competitive" "free market" works... those with the resources to exploit the rest of us are more free than ever to do so, and when people lose their livelihoods through outsourcing and relocating all manner of industries, it's our own fault for not being able to "compete" with the cheaper, less empowered, less regulated labor pools elsewhere in the world. It's funny how the very values and benefits that globalization was supposed to bring to the whole world - freedom and the capacity to consume product - are being undermined in the "developed" countries, where workers are spoiled, lazy, and coddled by unions and where government regulation prevents business from maximizing gains. Do business leaders and the corporate elite expect that the folks who are "outcompeting" us for jobs are going to be able to afford to purchase their products and services? Will a small, global middle class of consumers be enough to support elite accumulation and perpetuate the exploitation of a large and growing lower class of workers?

/fark, I sound like a farking commie...

this is such a lame copout, commodities cost what they cost, yeah your rent might be higher here or there but if you think some guy earning 500 bucks a year is living it up just because he lives in a part of the world with a lower cost of living you're high on crack.
