I suspect that the situation is somewhat sadder than her thinking she's A-list. She wants to schmooze with the A-list in the hopes of riding them back up there, but she's gone so far at this point that none of them will touch her with a 10-foot-pole, so she wants to be on a show where they'll have no choice.

Populations tend to be controlled by predation, famine, and disease.

We've wiped out our predators and famine/disease aren't really doing the trick any more to control our growth.

Maybe Dr. McCarthy realized this and the fact that we can't sustain this size of population forever and came up with the insane autism/vaccination thing as a canard to help restore the natural order of things. This would convince the ignorant masses to give up vaccinations and thus will help to keep our population in check preventing ultimately a mass die off and possibly extinction.

Or maybe she's just crazy and stupid.

I'd say it's a toss up.

It's fine for stupid people to die because of their stupidity. Unfortunately, it's kids who suffer and all too often, people who believe in vaccination losing their babies because the kid's too young to vaccinate and the yahoos have destroyed the herd immunity.
