One of my fondest memories was going hunting with my god-father. We spent the entire night drinking beer, passing a joint between us, and watching the entire 6.5 hours of the Lonesome Dove. It finished right at the time we needed to head to the blinds.

I love the man, too. One of my all time favorite movie fight scenes was from "Secondhand Lions":

" You hold it wrong, son. Not like this. You always do it like this... smooth. Try it again."

Well, he didn't get to the part where they sat alone, huddled in a small box in the trees with a giant Freudian penis in each of their hands.

I read the book before I saw the movie. Excellent casting all around, but Duvall brought Bull to life in ways from the book I hadn't imagined could be done. Outstanding!

Funny. With a username like that, I figured you would love "giant freudian penises"

Rooster Cogburn: Short feisty fella, nervous and quick, got a messed-up lower lip.
Emmett Quincy: That don't bring nobody to mind. A funny lip?
Rooster Cogburn: Wasn't always like that, I shot him in it.
Emmett Quincy: In the lower lip? What was you aiming at?
Rooster Cogburn: His upper lip.

I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, KILLED MANY MEN and loved only one woman with a passion a FLEA like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. NOW, GO HOME, BOY!

The Apostle is not only a great movie, but one of the best movies about the South ever made. I understand that was a personal project of his, made mostly on his own dime.

Plus it has June Carter Cash. What more can you ask?

Quite well actually, and cook some got-damn fine BBQ. He lives not to far from me and when the whim takes him, invites anyone who wants to come to his house for Tango dancing and BBQ.

I will watch him in anything...but The Apostle may have been his best work.

This thread got me thinking of all the Duvall films I've seen, and you know what? I can't think of a single one that sucked, or a mediocre one that wasn't mitigated by his role. The dude is just that good.

/still think Col. Kilgore's character (Apoc Now) had more dramatic impact in such little screen time as any, ever.

Robert Duvall is truly one of the great actors of our lifetimes. It pisses me off to realize he's that old, because it means he won't be with us much longer.

And every time I watch Lonesome Dove, I've noticed that the room gets incredibly dusty during Gus McCrae's death scene. What an odd coincidence.

Apparently, Duvall felt slighted that Pacino was being paid five times what Duvall would have been, which is kind of a fair complaint given Duvall's A-list stature at the time (and even now). According to an article I read, Coppola was at his house trying to recruit him for the film, but Duvall balked. He said he would be fine with Pacino making twice or three times the dough, but five times was considered an insult. From what I know, it was his decision.

/will gladly pay money to see a movie I've heard nothing about, as long as Duvall is in it

He's awesome! That one Black & White Twilight Zone episode where he's in love with the tiny woman in a dollhouse; as Boo "Mister Arthur" Radley; in that movie where he finds out he's part Negro & James Earl Jones is his brother.

Considering the only reason the film was made was because Copolla needed the cash - I don't blame Duvall for balking at it - for any reason.
